Meet Cynthia, Engineer II at OPPD. 👋 Cynthia was inspired to pursue a career in engineering to make a positive impact on people's lives. She finds the field intellectually stimulating and enjoys solving problems that enhance the quality of life in her community. At OPPD, Cynthia's days are filled with diverse projects related to distributing power to customers. She works on everything from creating layout drawings to assembling work orders. Cynthia values the supportive culture at OPPD, which fosters career growth, personal wellness and meaningful connections. Transitioning from chemical to electrical engineering and learning the intricacies of a utility have been significant challenges in her career. She overcame them by asking questions, watching tutorials, learning by doing and relying on her determination and curiosity. Her advice to aspiring engineers is, "Pursue what you love regardless of obstacles. The obstacles are only as big as you think they are." 💪 #InternalWomeninEngineeringDay

A few years ago I was introduced to James Williamson at NAAME. A couple of weeks later and I attended an event with NAAME regarding the skills shortage in our region. Most of (if not all) of the companies attending all agreed on one thing - we have a MASSIVE skills shortage at the moment within engineering (and STEM). The best part of this was that some of the attendees realised that no one was going to fix this unless we did something about it. This was when I met the great minds of Daniel Leggett, Rachel Bunn and Tom Beales - who all agreed on this problem and that we need to fix it. There are other amazing companies involved such as SMS Group | Ship Repair | Marine Interiors | Marine Engineering | SC SQEP. Fast forward to 2023 and the first cohort of the Skills Bootcamp was completed with the 8 students all completing a 11 week program that consisted of learning new disciplines such as welding, mechanics and electrical etc. But most importantly of all - learning new life skills. Today was the final day of the second cohort of the Skills Bootcamp and this time 11 (now I think about it it maybe 12 😄) students had completed the same 11 week program - again learning those new life skills. What amazes me the most was one of the students driving 116 miles every Monday-Friday for those 11 weeks to make sure he attends the bootcamp and makes the most out of it, now that’s a prime example of commitment. I may only have a small part in this great adventure with the amazing team behind this but it’s a part I am so pleased to have. Bring on the next cohort. #skillshortage #engineering #greatyarmouth #STEM

Training is the key to great results but without leadership that training may not be able to yield any results, forget about the great! The video below conveys it more aptly anything I have seen! PS: the examples are everywhere to confirm the point. Just look around. You find inefficiencies, wastage or squandering of resources? Check if it’s lack of training or poor leadership

Reposting one of the most comically insightful videos I've come across! It showcases a couple's truly unique (read: bewildering!) approach to jointly filling a bottle with kerosene. While it's meant to give us a chuckle, it also subtly mirrors some familiar patterns we might recognize in corporate life. As you watch, you might observe: 🚫 Unintended wastage. 🔄 Inconsistent outcomes. 🌪️ A challenging work atmosphere. 🔧 Reliance on outdated methods, rather than smartly using technology. 👀 Over-reliance on supervision. 🤷 Leadership that leaves one scratching their head. 🐢 Overall inefficiency that's hard to ignore. In this age, when technology offers us efficient solutions, it's crucial for smart minds to embrace it and move away from antiquated processes. Found it amusing and oddly familiar? It's a gentle reminder of the importance of skill development and efficient methodologies in our professional journey. And if you ever encounter such 'unique' methods in your daily corporate life... well, remember you're not alone and maybe, just maybe, it's time for a change.😉
