An article in Edtopia by Andrew Boryga that mentions a practice I’ve embraced these past two years in AP Calculus: Peter Liljedahl’s ‘thinking classroom’. It has not been easy getting students to buy into this practice as they simply want me to tell them what they need to know, to stand at the front of the classroom and ‘teach’. Mind you I have not thrown other instructional strategies completely out the window but this new classroom is structured with a specific set of questions and problems to lead students to THEIR discovery of the topics and concepts. Despite the resistance, stay the course and it will address math anxiety, foster a positive math identity, and actively engage students. These practices aim to improve students’ mindset, engagement, and their overall learning experience in math throughout the year. The ‘Ah ha’ moments are more than worth it.

Once again, the pendulum will likely swing back to forcing children to memorize algorithms rather than understand how math works. This is yet another time when using the Montessori method could make a massive difference in math skills and their whole school experience, including knowledge acquisition, practical skills like critical thinking, and a love of learning. #montessori #montessorieducation #math #teaching #elementary #montessorielementary #loveoflearning #liflonglearners
