Thank you to the International Guide Dog Federation for highlighting my article in the recent Visionary publication. In this article I focus on building trust in philanthropy and creating community in guide dog organizations and missions advocating for people who are blind in uncertain global economic conditions. #internationalguidedogs #visionary #Guidedog #workingdog #nonprofitleadership
Trust is an important aspect of fundraising for IGDF member organizations: donors want their contributions to go to a good cause and be used appropriately. Our March 2023 Visionary explores how you can build trust-based philanthropy to support your organization's goals even in times of economic downturn. "Around the world, missions serving and advocating for people who are blind have a long history of weathering economic and political challenges and can position themselves to navigate these turbulent times. It is critical to focus on four key areas: communication, engagement, appreciation and building trust. "First, communication with key stakeholders should be a core strategy. Clients, donors, volunteers and team members should be kept abreast of how the organization is navigating this challenge. Regular updates on the impact of the economy on fundraising and service provision should be provided. In person meetings, e-mail and video updates and newsletters should all be leveraged to build stakeholder understanding of the current environment and to maintain good communication channels with constituents." TODAY ONLY: Giveaway gift match! We’re excited to participate in the annual #GiveBigPittsburgh event, and we’re hoping you’ll consider supporting PublicSource’s work with a gift here: https://lnkd.in/esCuby8 Why give? Simply put, when your neighbors have questions, they rely on PublicSource for in-depth local information. Here are some questions that our stories have explored so far this year: • What happens to unhoused people when a shelter is closed? •When aging, unmapped sewers need repairs, who pays? •What was it like to be considered for the jury in the Tree of Life shooting case? •With annexation “dead,” what’s next for Wilkinsburg? •How did the state Department of Environmental Protection respond when Shell’s cracker plant repeatedly violated emissions limits? •How did being told to “Speak English!” inspire a Pittsburgher to build a publication that celebrates local Latino culture? •Why are two Pittsburgh high schools, three miles apart, so different for those who study and work there? If you need another reason to support us today, all donations will be DOUBLED up to $1,000! This is a limited-time chance to have your support go even further. BUT WAIT! There’s another reason to make a #givingtuesday gift today too. We’re offering a special giveaway. If you make a gift at GiveBigPittsburgh or on our website, you’ll be entered to win 2 tickets valued at $170 to the Glow Ball on Friday, Dec. 1! This one-of-a-kind event will be at Oakland’s iconic PAA building, illuminated for the holidays by artist Ian Brill. The tickets include food, 2 drink tickets, dancing and more. Put on your fun and festive cocktail attire and get ready to glimmer, dazzle, sparkle, and glow! Giveaway details in comments below. Pittsburghers routinely tell us we produce reporting they want and need — but it takes reader support to keep producing it. We hope you’ll make a gift to help sustain paywall-free, fact-checked local journalism for you and your neighbors. If you agree that this opportunity is too important to miss — and if you want a shot at Glow Ball tickets — just click below to make your gift now.

Strategic Advisor to government, law enforcement and NGO's tackling child sexual exploitation and abuse
Today's parents and carers face a unique challenge. The first generation of children growing up digitally native and how best to keep them safe online, and to protect themselves from potential harm while learning about and enjoying all that the digitally connected world has to offer. Too often in the workplace we only train our staff on what we believe will bring the organisation direct value. It's all about the ROI. What ROI do you think you'll get from having staff who know how to keep the most vulnerable people in their lives safer, and know that their own organisation took the time to equip them to do it? Folks: while I'm drowning in communications about some of my most recent posts (sorry! I'll come back to those topics and requests and connections soon, I promise!), maybe I can change the topic for long enough to encourage folks in Western PA/OH/WV area to seriously consider donating to PublicSource. News matters. We all know this because the bias in news over many, many years is what has led to our poorly-educated, poorly-oriented, conspiracy-loving ways and to so much divisiveness. We need honest, factual, deep, relevant local news as a salve for these wounds of bias. That's PublicSource. They cover real news from our region (greater Pittsburgh area), and they no it without a loss of fuss. PublicSource has covered the actual story behind housing instability in the region. They have audited the use of public funds and shown where the money went. They provided a super in-depth set of stories about property taxes (one of my favorite subjects in Allegeny Count--really!). They cover real estate development, community activism, art, housing, compensation, politics, transportation, economic development and more. PublicSource exists because of our donations, because advertising doesn't really pay for news. If you've never read PublicSource before, please consider doing so today. If you've read, but never donated to PublicSource before, please consider doing so today as well. I give these folks money and I serve on the board of directors because I value what they're doing and I value their existence in our region. You should, too. (PS: your money will be multiplied by matches right now, including money from me, so give away some of my money, please. But also, just give something, please). Thanks!

Managing Director of Bearwood Community Hub CIC, ambitiously striving for inclusive social change to enable all in our community to thrive.
Time is running out for us. At Bearwood Community Hub CIC we are working our socks off to try and save the Bearwood Corks Social Club building on Bearwood Road. We need a philanthropic individual to help us. The immediate hurdle is needing a £100k investment to pay off the Corks' debts to HMRC and prevent their liquidation, in return for a charge on the building, paid back when we (or others) buy. If we succeed, the Asset of Community Value designation we achieved can stay in place and we will have time to raise the funds for the building purchase and remedial works. If we don't succeed, liquidation of the club is likely, with a quick sale to private developers. Yet another heritage building lost in Smethwick, and a rare opportunity lost for our social impact work to become more financially sustainable. *We have until 12th June, a little over a week* Yet I refuse to give up until the last possible moment. We all know there is plenty of money out there, but that getting it to where it can have biggest social impact is often an impossible task. Our community has already pledged £25k towards the purchase in 3 weeks, more than 250 people have responded to our online consultation (huge if we compare to most Sandwell-wide public consultations) and over 100 turned up to our consultation events. So who do you know with a philanthropic mindset who might make this relatively low risk investment (low risk as the building will definitely be sold within months and funds paid back)? Watch the video and tell me it's not worth it! https://lnkd.in/ebD3jfBj
