Yesterday, #OHLAUSA’s wonderful team of summer interns in our Southeast Civil Region took a site tour of our rehabilitation project at Opa Locka Executive Airport in Miami-Dade County, FL. Led by our site team, the tour consisted of a project overview and Q&A session along with a visit to several areas onsite where work is underway. Our industry’s future engineers and builders received extensive knowledge about the important work on this two-phased project that will rehabilitate a runway and reconstruct its multiple taxiways at the airport, which accommodates a variety of private, pleasure, and business flights. OHLA USA has already completed the demolition of the runway ends and main taxiways while executing their full reconstruction, which will include full-depth pavement and overlay asphalt placement. The project team is also responsible for overseeing the installation of electrical systems, and new obstruction and approach lighting systems, as well as the placement of landscaping and signage. Our hard-working and talented site team is comprised of Operations Manager, Kristian Navarro; Project Manager, Inigo Uraga; Project Engineer, Ivanna Castro; Superintendents, Victor Parisi, William Tarafa, and Manuel Font; and Safety Manager, Steven Mayberry. #airportconstruction #airportinfrastructure #interns #construction #engineering #wheelsup #fullthrottle #weareOHLA #webuildexcellence

𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑰 𝒑𝒖𝒕 𝒎𝒚 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒕 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆… One of the regular working days during my student internship, I followed the Chief surveyor to a particular site for survey work. I did not know I was going to get mud bath for my feet😂 I was super uncomfortable and the me of that time was never ready to get uncomfortable. I had a Chief that was always ready to push people to get the best out of them I had no choice but to get in there because he asked me to. I will be honest with you, I was displeased but I did it eventually. Today, that project; 🏗️Soars 10 stories into the sky 🏗️Is thriving on an investment platform and is set for successful completion next year I no longer work on that project but I’m proud to have left my foot print there. In mockery, a colleague took that photo but now it has become a milestone snapshot. So what are you doing that’s discomforting you? Take a different look at the challenge the daily tasks bring. You may just be making your own mark. 𝑰 𝒂𝒎 𝒂 𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒉𝒂𝒕, 𝒂 𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚. It is amazing all of the things I have learned over the course of this internship. I have learned the importance of measuring twice and cutting once, I learned how to shoot grade for the structure of buildings and how important that is with how thick the concrete needs to be. I have also been taught the importance of laying sewer lines and the slope for the best drainage. #Everbuilt #CTEInternship

An Architecture and Engineering Student at the Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center. Intern for Koberstein Contracting, Inc.
As I am now a few months into my internship, I can say I have learned a lot. The knowledge that has been provided to me during this internship is unforgettable and much appreciated! Here is a list of a few things I have learned: - How to set up, use, and properly layout a site using GPS equipment. (Pictured Below: 2 gate Values and a Tee) - How to correctly calibrate a site utilizing GPS equipment. - How to mathematically check interferences in new utilities with existing utilities. - A better understanding of plan reading. - How to wet tap a waterline, without shutting it down. - How to do topsoil cut and fill calculations. - A better understanding of how to correctly install utilities per an engineer's standards. #indianaCTE #internships #architecture @AsherAlden Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center #KobersteinContracting #careertecheducation @SICTCEngineering&ArchitectureAlumni J. In the cutthroat world of civil and structural engineering, the term 'internship' often gets thrown around as a magic solution for migrant and graduate engineers struggling to break into the 👩🏽💻🙇🏽 Australian job market. But here's the harsh reality: not all internships are created equal. The difference between a generic internship and a well-structured, engineer-developed program can be the line between career success and continued joblessness.

Travis Overton, AIA NCARB LEED AP has been our CEO for two years now. A lot of decisions he has made this year have been powered by putting people first. So, we asked him a few questions about Employee Happiness at work. 😀⬇️ What’s been your happiness-highlight so far this year? “It’s tough for me to choose one highlight because we’ve had several great moments this year. We’ve opened two new offices, increased our staff by 20%, we established a “Shadow Board” of Directors providing an opportunity for future leaders to collaborate, and we’ve formally established an Interior Design Department. With all that said, I am so proud and impressed by the way the firm came together around our internship program this year. 💻Our internship program is one of the most critical ways to propel our firm into the future. COVID took us out of our rhythm, but it gave us a chance to rethink the whole program – why it’s important and what we could do better. We generated a lot of energy internally and ended up hosting 17 interns across all six offices 🏢 and multiple disciplines; architecture, mechanical, electrical, transportation, and civil engineering. We had an outstanding group of interns – a really sharp group of students. It's a huge accomplishment for our firm and has opened so many opportunities to connect with that generation of architects and engineers in the coming years.” What are you most looking forward to over the next few months? “It’s been a busy year. We’ve done a lot of work, and we have a lot of work on our plates. 🍽️ We are awaiting the outcome of several funding applications and upcoming school votes for significant capital projects. Over the next few months, I’m looking forward to making a big push to end the year and celebrating another successful year with the staff at our Christmas Parties and 29th Annual Toy Drive. 🎁 It’s important for us to take some time at the end of the year to reflect on our accomplishments, spend time with our families, and recharge for a strong start to 2024.” #ceo #happinessatwork #happiness #internationalhappinessatworkweek #architects #engineers #ae #firm #hiringnow #transportationdesign #transportationengineering

I completed my second internship at the Karayolları Genel Müdürlüğü. I took part in various road works, the construction of engineering structures and projects. According to my experiences, although working in road construction was stressful and tiring, I generally enjoyed my internship. Because it was fun, and it attracted me because I was learning something new. I saw different techniques, different programs, different working conditions and different interdisciplinary studies. It was a very enjoyable and useful internship for me. I was even sad that it ended. It was a little difficult for me at first because I didn't take transportation lessons at school. However, I made up for my lack of knowledge by asking my supervisors during the internship and by watching various videos and reading articles at home after the internship. In addition to the areas of interest of civil engineers, I had the opportunity to work and see the duties of survey engineers and environmental engineers. I also made elevation measurements and determined the culvert sizes by calculating the river basin. I also improved myself in areas such as reading road projects, iron projects, and making static calculations in the construction field. This internship was great preliminary information for me for the transportation course I will take at school. As a result, I improved my communication skills, teamwork abilities, adaptability, and motivation skills throughout the internship. I also learned that I need to build on the knowledge I gained at school in the field and during my internship. I would like to thank all Karayolları Genel Müdürlüğü engineers and employees. #civilengineering #ulusalstajprogramı #inşaatmühendisliği #tunnel #roadproject #engineering #concrete #construction #project #design #bridge
