This Juneteenth, we can collectively – and individually – honor and celebrate the end of enslavement in the United States. At OhioHealth, we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where every voice is heard, respected and valued. Today, we reflect on the importance of this continued commitment, the past and present contributions of Black individuals, and our role in the ongoing fight against racism and discrimination in all its forms. As we mark Black History Month, it's crucial to reflect on diversity and representation within organizations like ours. In the child welfare system, Black children and families are disproportionally represented, highlighting the urgent need for change. According to national statistics, Black children are overrepresented in foster care, with a significant presence in Douglas County's child welfare system. While 40% of the children served by CASA for Douglas County identify as Black, only 5% of our Volunteer Advocates are Black/African American. To address this disparity, we must take intentional steps at all levels of the system. Diversity isn't just a buzzword; it's essential for effective advocacy. By recruiting more Black Volunteer Advocates, we can ensure equitable representation and provide culturally competent support to children and families. Join us in empowering Black children and families. Together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society. To read our full blog, click here: https://lnkd.in/enEKfVEA

Actions to promote a more inclusive and equitable society for Black History Month - Part 7 Finaly. Use your voice to advocate for policies and practices that promote equality and justice. Write letters to elected officials, sign petitions, and support campaigns that aim to address systemic racism and discrimination. By actively engaging in advocacy efforts, we can help bring about meaningful change. It's important to remember that these actions should extend beyond Black History Month. Promoting inclusivity and equity should be an ongoing commitment in our daily lives. By continuously educating ourselves, challenging biases, and actively supporting and uplifting Black individuals and communities, we can work towards a more inclusive and equitable society for everyone. #advocateforchange #blackhistorymonth #engageinchange

Cabinet Member for Children's Services for London Borough of Merton and Chair of Governors at Haslemere Primary School
As we conclude the official #BlackHistoryMonth, it's essential to remember that the celebration and acknowledgment of #BlackHistory shouldn't be confined to a single month. The fight for equality and against racism is ongoing, and the stories that inspire us during this month should continue to fuel our commitment to change. During October, we celebrated the incredible achievements and contributions of Black individuals like Patrick Hutchinson, whose actions during the #BlackLivesMatter protests epitomise the spirit of unity. His selfless act of carrying a counter protester to safety served as a powerful symbol of what can be accomplished when we come together in the face of adversity. Patrick's book, 'Everyone Versus Racism,' is a reminder that the journey to confront racial injustices and educate ourselves about Black history doesn't end with the conclusion of Black History Month. It's a year-round commitment to promote understanding, equality, and justice. While we've taken time to reflect on the challenges and achievements of the UK’s Black community during this dedicated month, we must carry the lessons and inspiration forward into the rest of the year. Recent events, such as the conviction of a Conservative MP for racially abusing an activist, remind us that there's still work to be done. The fight against racism continues, and it’s these stories of resilience, unity, and hope that must serve as our guide as we strive for a more inclusive and equitable future ✊🏾 #BlackHistoryMonth365 #BritishHistory

This week is Black Maternal Health Week April 11th through the 17th. I’m bringing awareness by calling to action all hiring managers to develop a workforce especially in Healthcare that is culturally competent and sensitive to the needs and experiences of Black women and birthing people. This includes understanding the historical context of systemic racism in healthcare, addressing implicit biases, and providing care that is respectful and affirming of Black culture and identity. #healthjusctice

As we step into Black History Month, let's acknowledge not only the rich history and achievements of African Americans but also the challenges that persist. A staggering fact remains that African Americans, who make up 13% of the U.S. population, represent 40% of the homeless population. This statistic reflects deep-rooted systemic issues that need our urgent attention and action. At Humility Homes and Services, we are committed to addressing these disparities and providing support to all in need. This month, as we celebrate the resilience and contributions of the Black community, let's also commit to fighting against the inequalities that lead to homelessness. #BlackHistoryMonth #EndHomelessness #EqualityForAll
