A landmark report by the Lancet Breast Cancer Commission has highlighted gross inequities in breast cancer care in both low and high-income countries globally. “Many groups are being systemically left behind, ignored or forgotten” - Professor Charlotte Coles, Chair of the Lancet Commission. People living with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) make up one of those groups in the report. People living with MBC tell us they feel left behind and invisible because they are not consistently counted on Australia's cancer registries. In step with the Commission’s priorities to tackle breast cancer inequities, BCNA is proud to be leading the advocacy to have Australians living with MBC consistently counted on our cancer registries in all state and territories. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues, we're reminded of the devastating impact the disease has on the many lives it touches. Despite the efforts of dedicated organisations and countless individuals across the nation, breast cancer still claims lives. Every day, 57 people are diagnosed and nine people die of the disease. It's estimated that 3,255 women and 36 men will die from breast cancer this year alone. In the face of these statistics, we recognise the ripple effect that these losses have, extending to families, friends, colleagues and entire communities. While the grief experienced may be shared, it's still difficult and long-lasting. We want to take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the tireless work of the four major breast cancer organisations, including Breast Cancer Network Australia, National Breast Cancer Foundation, McGrath Foundation and Cancer Australia. They are the driving force behind the progress made across world-class research, support, awareness and advocacy. Did you know that medulloblastoma is the most common brain tumor in kids? As May marks Brain Tumor Awareness Month we shed light on the challenges faced by these children and their families. Despite treatment advancements, the journey remains tough. Grainne Owen, CEO of Curing Kids Cancer, has dedicated her life to pediatric cancer research after losing her son to leukemia. Grainne founded Curing Kids Cancer in 2005 to prevent other families from experiencing the same heartbreak. Curing Kids Cancer collaborates with institutions like Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the COllaborative Network for NEuro-oncology Clinical Trials (CONNECT), led by Dr. Maryam Fouladi. This consortium conducts clinical trials to improve outcomes for children with severe brain tumors by combining novel drugs with traditional therapies. This Brain Tumor Awareness Month, Curing Kids Cancer emphasizes the importance of awareness and research. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children battling brain tumors and work towards a future where every child can lead a healthy, cancer-free life. Breast Cancer Canada is excited to see PROgress Tracker being featured on the national stage at The Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology (CAPO) conference in Calgary today. Presented by Dr. Doris Howell from Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Research Institute, today’s presentation discussed how a breast cancer diagnosis has a profound impact on a patient's emotional and physical well-being, as well as their overall quality of life. Dr. Howell is a one of the Principal Investigators on Breast Cancer Canada’s national PROgress Tracker study. This registry aims to capture and amplify the voices of individuals living with breast cancer through their own reported experiences and outcomes. The ultimate goal is to use this data to improve breast cancer care for future Canadian patients. The information collected through this registry lifts up patient voices and is helping us understand the real-life experiences of those who are living with breast cancer. March is Multiple Myeloma Cancer Awareness Month    Learning that you or a loved one has cancer is a life changing moment. Knowing this, at the Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI), we understand the gravity of this moment, which is why we are dedicated to ensuring that every one of our patients is treated with respect and compassion. Through our ongoing research trials, we also work tirelessly to better understand the cancers affecting our patients.     One of the cancers we are working to better understand is Multiple Myeloma – a rare and complex cancer. Cancer patients in the United States are “increasingly shifting from older to middle-aged individuals,” as overall cancer incidence increases among people younger than 50, according to a new report from the American Cancer Society. The report projects that there will be about 2 million new cancer cases in the US this year, equivalent to more than 5,000 diagnoses each day. It also projects that there will be about 600,000 cancer deaths this year. Among adults younger than 50, colorectal cancer has become the leading cause of cancer death in men and the second-leading cause in women, behind breast cancer, the new report says. In the late 1990s, it ranked fourth in both men and women younger than 50. Here's the latest.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer amongst women in Australia and roughly 1 in 500 men are diagnosed in their lifetime. Approximately 57 Australians are diagnosed each and every day. That equates to over 20,000 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer each year. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it's not just about early detection and treatment. It's also a time to acknowledge and support those who have experienced the profound impact of breast cancer on their lives. During this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let's remember that behind every statistic, there's a unique story of strength and loss. Let's be there for one another, offering support, empathy and a shoulder to lean on when needed. Share your story, offer a listening ear, or donate to organisations that are making a difference in breast cancer research and support. We stand with all those who have lost loved ones to breast cancer and those who continue to battle this relentless disease. Every October we remember the lives of our loved ones lost to breast cancer and the struggles of those who are living with it. #Pinktober is focused on spreading awareness about breast cancer and access to resources to support people living with cancer. In 2018, FWRM published a report titled "Breaking the Barriers: Understanding Cancer Services, Screening and Treatment Available for Women in Fiji" that found that breast and the cervix are the two common registered cancers in the Fiji cancer registry; making up 30 per cent of cancers listed. The report also found that that many women are still presenting themselves very late with stage three cervical and breast cancer which the oncology unit cannot provide effective treatment for. Palliative care can only be provided to women at this stage.
