Exciting work by the team of David Gomez Varela exploring the #metaproteome. The team demonstrates substantially increased sensitivity achieving single-bacterium resolution. They demonstrate identification over 45,000 proteins and 220 species, matching the taxonomic depth of full-length 16S rRNA analysis, all within a mere 30 minutes using just 25ng of fecal peptides. The implications of this are profound, paving the way for advancements in understanding the complex interplay within our microbiome. What an exciting time to do science :) #StayCurious #microbiome, #metaproteomics, #singlebacteriumproteomics, #timsTOF https://lnkd.in/gUFkYJ5t

We’re excited that our latest research on human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) and Bifidobacteria has been published in the special issue "Probiotics, Prebiotics and Gut Health" in the journal Nutrients MDPI . Gerben Hermes, Anja Wellejus & Christine Rasmussen investigated how strain-level genomic variation affects HMOs utilization in different Bifidobacterium species. This work sheds light on the genetic factors that contribute to the persistence of individual Bifidobacterium strains and will aid in the development and optimization of new early-life microbiota modulating products like pre-, pro- and synbiotics, to improve infant health. 🔬Read more about this research: https://ow.ly/V22U50SlqnA #probiotics #synbiotics #infantmicrobiome #research

Hot off the press! In a recent publication in #NatureMicrobiology, Oleg Sitsel and colleagues from the #MaxPlanckInstituteOfMolecularPhysiology (Dortmund, Germany) described the Tc toxin secretion mechanism of Yersinia entomophaga, an insect pathogen. #BacterialExotoxins (such as botulinum, tetanospasmin) are typically protein molecules that damage host tissues thus playing an important role in #infection and #disease. https://lnkd.in/dH3xBG3N In this interesting article, the authors discovered that a small subset of Y. entomophaga cells exhibit altruistic behavior, undergo differentiation, and take up the task of #TcToxin (YenTc) synthesis and secretion. #GeneticTools, #FluorescenceMicroscopy and #ProteomicAnalysis were used to identify that the type 10 secretion system (#T10SS) is responsible for YenTc secretion and factors affecting it. The authors used #ElectronCryotomography (CryoET) to visualize the YenTc #ToxinReleaseProcess in detail from Y. entomophaga cells. The cryoET findings revealed a crucial insight: the YenTc toxin release is lytic, as opposed to the non-lytic toxic release suggested earlier. The study highlights the significance of cryoET in providing #NovelInsights into #BacterialCellBiology and #Pathology as well as helping to validate earlier hypotheses. Similar investigations on other pathogenic bacteria will provide important insights into the #Pathogenesis, aiding in the identification of #NovelDrugTargets and #AntibioticDesign. #BacterialToxin, #SecretionSystem, #PathogenicBacteria, #CryoET, #AntibioticTargets

In bacteria, MUMMER allows identity of polymorphisms which can be chargeable for virulence, pathogenicity & anti-biotic resistance. The device became additionally implemented to Minimal Organism Project at TIGR and ultimately to many different comparative genomics projects. Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the baker`s yeast, became the primary eukaryote to have its whole genome collection posted in 1996 #oriele #esenyurt #virus #antibiotic https://shorturl.at/qtHS2

Microbiome sequencing is a scientific technique that involves the analysis of genetic material (DNA or RNA) derived from the microorganisms inhabiting a particular environment or host. The microbiome encompasses a diverse array of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and archaea, and plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including digestion, immunity, and overall health. Although strictly host-associated bacteria are ubiquitous in nature, evolution experiments with these microbes are lacking, very likely as a result of the challenges inherent to studying these systems. We designed an evolution experiment in an obligate intracellular amoeba symbiont related to the major human pathogen Chlamydia trachomatis, where we revealed fresh insights into molecular evolution and temperature adaptation of this strictly host-dependent bacterial symbiont. Read more about my earlier PhD work in my most recent publication. #evolution #genomics #bacteria #environmentalchlamydiae #biology #research #phd
