Sign the petition. Literally tons of good usable food is waste annually. An appalling amount. Meanwhile, people are hungry and retail chains claim record profits. Now, the government has just u-turned on a new policy (no surprises) to force chains to publish their food waste. 🚨It's crunch time for EU food waste🚨The champions and opponents of EU food waste - revealed! As the European Council is on cusp of deciding its stance on legally binding EU food waste targets, the Prevent Waste Coalition have produced a new policy briefing showing that ambitious food waste targets are attainable, and published results of a survey revealing which member states are championing and blocking more ambitious food waste action. Last year, the Commission proposed woefully inadequate targets to reduce food waste by 30% for households/retail/catering, only 10% for manufacturing and no targets at all for primary production - arguing that higher targets were not feasible. The Parliament proposed slightly higher targets of 40%/20% respectively. Our policy briefing shows that more ambitious targets are feasible and essential - I've been working on this briefing for months, and delighted to share it with you all - covered in Euractiv today. 🍎Big food waste news!🍎Council of the EU have agreed support for legally binding EU food waste targets, but only an unambitious 30% reduction in household/catering/retail food waste by 2030, and an extremely unambitious 10% reduction in processing/retail food waste, with no targets for primary production. This falls scandalously short of the 50% farm to fork reduction in food waste needed to meet Sustainable Development Goal 12.3. This is despite huge pressure from civil society groups including the Prevent Waste Coalition - which I've been working on with Feedback EU colleagues, alongside EEB, Zero Waste Europe, Safe Food Advocacy Europe and Too Good To Go. The Council's position is identical to the Commission's, whereas the Parliament is slightly more ambitious, supporting 40% reductions for household/catering/retail and 20% for processing/manufacturing. We must push for at least the Parliament's level of ambition to be achieved - with a particular need to raise the woefully low manufacturing targets. The latest analysis from WRAP highlights the urgent and huge action needed to tackle food waste. Not all of our brains work in kg and %, so to help contextualise an average family of four will waste nearly 48 STONE of food waste in one year. Take a moment to think about how many 'yous' that this. This comes at a huge cost environmentally, socially and financially. The impacts of this staggering mass of waste are felt by our environment, the householder and the local authority. Continued work is needed across the supply chain, but for local authorities this really highlights the need to prioritise prevention and maximise separate collection of food waste that does arise. At Local Partnerships LLP we've been supporting local authorities in developing their strategic approaches to resource management, understanding and evaluating options for service design, and developing business cases for change.
