But our national monuments encompass not only statues—indeed, the Statue of Liberty is one—but vast and stunning landscapes located both on land and under water, as well as buildings or other sites of cultural and historic significance. The history of Black burial grounds in North America dates back to the times of slavery. During this dark period, enslaved individuals often lacked the right to be buried in the same cemeteries as their white counterparts. As a result, they established their own burial grounds, often on the outskirts of plantations or in remote areas, and most commonly, buried next to their Black churches. These sacred spaces served as a final resting place and a sanctuary where cultural and spiritual traditions could be preserved and passed down. Although many of the earliest burial grounds have disappeared into farmlands today, Victoria Lawn Cemetery, Negro burial grounds and several more are still Canada’s historically significant cemeteries to the Black community.
