For those of you who don't know, I have other passions outside of accounting! One of those is Templeogue United. My connection started as an eager 5-year-old who thought he would one day play for Ireland and Manchester United... we all need to dream. I was fortunate enough to be elected as Chair of the Club's Executive Committee in 2021 after being on the committee since 2013. We embarked on an audacious project in late 2020 to complete a full refurbishment of the ground floor of our existing clubhouse and are now just a few months away from completion. This project would not be possible without the help and support of the following: 1.    The Volunteers: The many volunteers who keep our club running and provide happiness (and some sadness!) to approximately 600 boys and girls every week. These volunteers often double up as coaches, players, committee members, and fundraisers. 2.    The Parents: The parents who make a big effort to get their kids to training, matches, and camps throughout the year. We rely on the yearly subscriptions to support the club's costs, and we wouldn't be able to survive without the timely receipt of these amounts. On this topic, we extend our gratitude to ClubZap, who have transformed the administrative process of registering players. 3.     Sponsors and Financial Institutions: Our goal is to provide best-in-class facilities to our members and the wider community. To do this, we rely on the support of many sponsors. From sponsoring new kits to funding trips away, the generosity of certain people knows no bounds. We have too many sponsors to mention, but thank you all! For such a big project like the clubhouse refurbishment, we still needed more, and this is where our partnership with Heritage Credit Union Dublin became a priority. Their help and support have been invaluable. Special thanks to Alan Roche and Niall Manning QFA PB. We share a common goal, community engagement! 4.    Grant support: We received a grant through the Sports Capital Programme, which would not have been possible without the support of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, the Football Association of Ireland, South Dublin County Council, and the various TDs and councillors who supported our application. Finally, it would be remiss of me not to include a plug for a major fundraiser that we are running to assist with the cost of delivering this project. I developed the phrase Sovereignty Before Solidarity long ago because I could easily spot how superficial many allyship practices, and even solidarity and multi-identity coalition-building movements were. These movements were negotiated by very specific touch points, where individuals were assigned to negotiate between communities, without much actual trust. As an analogy, where these communities should have intersected like a zipper, it appeared more like diamonds with their tips meeting. The idea was for folks to develop the power in their spaces, and when the time was right to come to the table as equals to discuss communal needs, find common ground, and advocate for needs each other's unique needs that weren't of the common interest. But in the meantime, there would be a heightened degree of communal self-reliance, and success would hopefully begin to be shared and replicated across communities in order to achieve the critical mass we needed for systemic change, common purpose. The zipper would start forming. But now as inter-communal bonds are rupturing, we are regressing back to the divisive cultural battles that everyone loves to hate. Welcome to the era of irritation.

Great to read this report by the Community Ownership Commission, with support from the Co-operative Party, highlighting the potential to increase the scale and impact of community ownership in the UK. We see community ownership as a powerful avenue for empowering local groups, helping them control the assets and services they use while fostering a stronger sense of community pride and belonging. Despite evident demand, there is still a need to provide more support to communities in many parts of the country so they can build the necessary capabilities to take on asset ownership. Anyone else thanking the Lord they're Welsh today?! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 As a Welsh business person, as Vice Chair of Community Foundation Wales and most definitely as a grandparent, I'm excited by the ambition of #CymruCan, Future Generations Commissioner Derek Walker's strategy, today. It's all about real action to pick up the pace and drive long-term thinking into the heart of our nation, including The Office of the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales creating tools to help organisations do that - and then measuring the impact. As a businesswoman, it's exciting because the contribution businesses in Wales can - and, generally, want - to make is a huge opportunity to get us the Cymru we need for everyone's wellbeing now and in the future. Particularly as a comms professional with a heartfelt belief in purpose, this is really powerful and engaging stuff that can bring people together with meaning - and it's national! As a trustee, it's important because the work of the Community Foundation is all about delivering a fairer, more equal Wales - including working with businesses like Principality Building Society and Newsquest to do so.
