This summer Oakland Public Works is installing two large trash capture devices in our storm drainage system that will capture trash, oil, grease, and other debris from stormwater runoff, preventing these pollutants from entering our waterways. Large trash capture devices are installed directly into the City’s underground storm drainage pipes and each one is strategically placed to capture trash from hundreds of acres upstream. The City has already installed 10 of these large devices in other locations, and is installing hundreds of smaller ones in storm drain inlets across Oakland to comply with California’s mandate to prevent trash from entering waterways through the storm drainage system. Thank you to Caltrans for investing in these technically complex and vital projects! We are currently planning for additional improvements to our storm drain system. A planner with the City of Oakland, Lakshmi Rajagopalan, has been selected by Greenbelt Alliance as a 2024 Hidden Hero of the Greenbelt awardee. The Hidden Heroes of the Greenbelt Awards honor exceptional climate champions working at the intersection of land use and climate change in the Bay Area. Ms. Rajagopalan is recognized for her instrumental role in advancing abundant climate-smart housing through her work on Oakland's 2045 General Plan Update, Phase 1, Housing Element, and other key initiatives. "My office was proud to nominate Lakshmi Rajagopalan for this award," stated Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao. "Lakshmi is an incredible leader in the City of Oakland whose attention to detail, strong sense of equity, and collaborative approach helped us pass a General Plan that prioritizes our residents and the future of our city. Congratulations, Lakshmi, for everything you have done!" “Our selection committee had the difficult task of choosing among many inspiring stories, and Lakshmi’s stood out for her commitment to equity, relationship building, and impactful work on housing policies,” said Amanda Brown-Stevens, Executive Director of Greenbelt Alliance. “On behalf of Greenbelt Alliance, I would like to congratulate Ms. Rajagopalan and the City of Oakland for being selected out of such a strong pool of candidates to receive the Hidden Hero award.” Congratulations Lakshmi! 🎉

Congratulations to the Oakland Public Works Training Academy class of 2024! Last week we gathered to celebrate Angel Luis, Antonio, Briana, Enrique, Froylan, Miracle, and Sotiaka who have just graduated from a 6-month pre-apprenticeship program that will help them launch careers in public service. The Academy is a grant-funded “grow-our-own” program that offers young Oaklanders with paid, on-the-job training at Oakland Public Works and career-building skills like resume writing and interviewing. Fifteen Oaklanders have graduated from our first two Academies, training in divisions that provide critical services like Facilities Maintenance, Environmental Services, Parks & Tree Services, Equipment Services, and Keep Oakland Clean and Beautiful. Four graduates were brought on board to fill key vacancies in these divisions, and all have learned skills that will serve them throughout their careers.
