Feeling energized and inspired after HEC Montreal’s Revolution ESG conference yesterday, which brought together 300 sustainability professionals and students across various sectors for a series of panel discussions. My key takeaways: -ESG must be embedded into corporate strategies, with a temporal lens of value creation over time. -ESG reporting shouldn’t be viewed as a compliance exercise, but rather as an opportunity for the bottom line and business growth (JingDong Hua, VP of International Sustainability Standards Board, ISSB) -We need to better communicate on decarbonization and the benefits of the clean energy transition must be shared equitably (Michael Sabia, CEO of Hydro-Québec) -We can do this, we need to just do the work! Under the guidance of Dr. Hanna Setterberg at ESMT Berlin, I've gained invaluable insights that promise to shape our approach to sustainability. 🌍 Exploring Global Challenges: We delved into the intricate interplay between global challenges and business relevance, from climate change to social inequality, understanding their impact on organizations. 📊 Navigating Sustainability Frameworks: From SASB to the EU CSRD, we explored various frameworks essential for effective sustainability reporting, providing structure to align practices with sustainability goals. 🔍 Materiality Assessment: Equipped with tools for materiality assessment, we identified and prioritized sustainability issues relevant to our stakeholders and organizations. 🌱 Aligning with UN's Sustainable Development Goals: Inspired by the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, we aim to integrate sustainability into our strategies, contributing to global missions. 🌿 ESG: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues and opportunities were discussed, from low carbon products to setting ESG targets, highlighting avenues for sustainable growth. 💡Reflecting on this journey, I'm eager to apply these learnings and contribute to a sustainable future. The Environment Analyst's Sustainability Delivery Summit may have ended, but my inspiration to drive change in the industry has only just begun! An ocean-wide thank you to the Environmental Financial Consulting Group (EFCG) for such a fantastic opportunity to engage with the thinkers, shakers, and doers in the field and for supporting my professional development. Here are my key takeaways from the summit: 🌱 The G32 companies and consulting firms are realigning their strategies to focus on environmental and sustainability consulting, a shift termed the "Great Reshuffle." 🌱 The global E&S consulting market is forecasted to reach $68B by 2027 driven by systems-based solutions, government regulations, and the net zero transition. 🌱 ESG, climate finance, and decarbonization are key industry drivers. 🌱 There is a growing need for multidisciplinary solutions, digitized approaches, and sustainability professionals with business acumen (shoutout to Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment)! 🌱 Sustainability is increasingly being embedded into business practices rather than being a bolt-on approach. This involves interdisciplinary approaches, stakeholder engagement, and reducing emissions to achieve net-zero goals. 🌱 Digital workflows and AI are enhancing efficiency, quality, and communication in environmental consulting, highlighting the importance of technological innovation and sustainable practices. 🌱 Integrating NbS into infrastructure design and urban areas is crucial for climate resilience, emphasizing stakeholder buy-in and the biodiversity-infrastructure connection. 🌱 Achieving a just energy transition involves balancing affordability, security, and sustainability. However, conventional green and social accounting metrics often fail to unveil the causal relationships between sustainability initiatives and investments and the tangible outcomes observed in real-world scenarios. A more comprehensive approach to sustainability assessment is needed, which can be broadly defined as a set of processes that guide the planning and decision-making process towards achieving sustainable development. Alternatively, sustainability assessment can also be defined as processes that integrate natural and societal systems, addressing both local and global dimensions, and encompassing both short-term and long-term perspectives. It can be seen as a means to determine whether an initiative is sustainable or not, or to evaluate it against a set of sustainability principles. Taking into account these definitions, this workshop aims to challenge the adequacy of current metrics and foster an understanding of: ▶ What sustainability issues public programs and investments aim to address. ▶ What theories of change underlie their design and implementation. ▶ What effects can be observed and verified through evaluation. #evaluation #measurement #impact #esgreporting #impactmanagement #theoryofchange
