Easy ways to create a sense of structure in the winter garden... The most famous gardens are often formed of outdoor ‘rooms’. This is to create a sense of enclosure and containment. Hedges give great structure – Yew with its deep green foliage works well as a foil to all other planting. Topiary, need not be spherical or clipped small and placed at a border edge. In our projects I like to use Beech, which glows in the autumn and winter. I like to plant forms of this in a border as massive cubes.

Ornamental grasses are a great option for a deer resistant plant that will give a lot of interest to your outdoor space. For definition to the boundary of a garden, use a row of short ornamental grasses. Tall ornamental grasses are a great way to cover a larger area of your outdoor space and make the landscape more visually appealing. When planted in appropriately, tall grasses can provide privacy. Smaller grasses can be grown in containers or urns, or in garden beds complementing other perennial flowering plants effectively. Is it possible to maintain your garden too much? To have a garden which is too tidy? It's a matter of opinion but here at Rob Hardy & Co, we appreciate the natural aesthetic of a garden. When nature is left to do its own thing, the results are often breathtaking. As we move towards the end of the season, as the days shorten and as herbaceous plants start to die back, there are still beautiful sights to behold in the garden. Rather than cutting everything back, why not try leaving plants to over-winter naturally and provide further interest throughout the colder months? Unclipped gardens can provide additional shade and shelter for wildlife bringing all forms of life to your garden. Seed heads, standing proud in the autumn frosts will provide gorgeous structure to the garden, as well as food for birds and insects.
