An interesting article by The Washington Post about men and social connectivity. If you know someone struggling, we have communities where people make lifelong friendships. We have been alleviating loneliness for years in thousands of neighborhoods. #WiderCircle #loneliness #lonely #socialisolation #community #neighborhood #connection #communityhealthcare #health https://lnkd.in/eY76ywhb

“Not Only the Lonely Speaking of social isolation and loneliness. Loneliness and disconnection have become high profile in 2023, as evidenced by the stance taken by United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, where he has called for action to address the issue as a profound Public Health crisis: “ To address loneliness and the unravelling of the social fabric, reconnecting people through reciprocal relationships based on their capacities rather than deficits or labels is key. The research of Myrra Vernooij-Dassen, an academic from the Netherlands, is important here because she emphasises the importance of avoiding stigmatising terms like loneliness and instead focusing on reestablishing connections among individuals. In other words, if we want to reduce loneliness, we must sidestep “loneliness” as an issue and emphasise increasing the valued social roles of those who currently feel isolated. This involves flipping the narrative from you are needy to you are needed. Many lonely people would tolerate social isolation to avoid feeling like a burden to others. Our message to them is, “You matter; you have a contribution to make to the wellbeing of this community, and we cannot build community without you.”

It’s been a long time coming, but here it is !!!……. Excited to share with you the second article in my ‘place musings’ series. If you work in community development, you’ve probably been in a position at some point in your career where you‘ve landed a job and found yourself in a community that you really don’t know much about. You then face the daunting task of navigating this complex and an unfamiliar landscape to develop solutions to really complex social challenges – homelessness, loneliness, youth disengagement, mental health. It can be challenging to know where to start! I believe there are two foundational pillars of practice that underpin our ability to navigate the complexity of communities to achieve positive outcomes. These are our knowledge of place and the relationships we have in place. Everything else builds on this. This article focuses on building knowledge about place. What can and should we learn about the places we work in and the communities that inhabit them? What questions might we ask to deepen our understanding? What helps us embed a focus on place knowledge in our day to day practice? Without a deep knowledge of place to guide our work we are ineffective at best and destructive at worst. If we don’t understand the capacity that already exists within a place, how do we expect to build it? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the chat - how do you build your place knowledge? I look forward to sharing the third article in this series, Place Relationships, over the coming weeks. These thought pieces were inspired by a piece of work I was commissioned to do for Anglicare WA last year. Big thanks to the amazing team there who invited me in to spark conversations about embedding place and community in their work. #buildingcommunity #socialimpact #reflectivepractice
