Morning all. I would be interested to hear people’s thoughts on this subject. For those of us that try our best to keep up to date with all things EV, we see continual reports on battery development and longevity of life for these batteries. Which is brilliant in itself. The question I am asking is in regards to when that battery does finally need replacing. Not just elements of it, but a total replacement. We know battery technology is improving at an incredible pace. It could be that when a car of today (with an NMC Lithium-ion battery) may need a replacement in 15 years time, what are the chances of getting those components for an NMC battery? In 15 years, there is a strong possibility that this type of battery is no longer available. Would anyone agree with this statement? The battery is just the energy source, so it may be that you could put the latest, more energy efficient, cost effective battery into an older car. I always use the example of buying a torch. You could put a cheaper supermarket own brand battery in it or a better more energy efficient Duracell (other brands are available 😉). They both do the same job, but one is better than the other. And we may see other breakthroughs in that time. Has anyone else ever had the discussion about more modern batteries going into older cars? Could we see a time when a Solid State battery is used as an alternative power source for a 15 to 20 year old EV?
