Peace Corps Ethiopia changed my life! It broadened my world and developed my confidence! iFLY Youth sends girls of color from the DMV overseas. Through our programming, we are determined to answer the following questions: 1) What would happen if girls from underserved communities learned about the world through first-hand real-world experiences in addition to textbooks and social media? 2) How might international travel change the trajectory of their personal, academic and professional lives? I could not imagine going on a trip with girls who looked like me! I wonder how that experience would've shaped my life. Today is Giving Black Day, please consider sharing with your network to spread the word - both about the program and for folks to consider donating! https://lnkd.in/g-Wz_57R Want to know where your money goes? $25 covers a meal at a local restaurant for a scholar $50 covers the cost of camp supplies for a scholar $75 covers the cost of a cultural activity (ex. cooking class). $150 covers passport fees (passport book photo) $300 covers lodging for one scholar for a week

Are all federal grants back-breaking, hair-pulling, teeth-clenching, 150-hour endeavors? Are there any that are within the reach of small nonprofits? This question came up recently with some peers in the Grant Professional Mentorship and below are some federal grants that are well within the reach of small nonprofits (let's call small an annual budget of $200K-$500K). 1. National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) | Grants for Arts Projects 2. Department of Agriculture (USDA) | Farm to School 3. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) | Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem Solving 4. Community Projects Funding/Congressional Directed Spending, AKA "earmarks" I've worked with community based organizations to secure funding across all of these grant programs. It is possible! Remember that federal money is also increasingly accessible via private entities that are being awarded federal funding to re-grant. What other grant programs are accessible to small nonprofits?

Please join us on Tuesday, October 3rd at 12 pm (EST) for a virtual event about what the SCOTUS decision on affirmative action means for philanthropic work in the South. While discussions about its implications have been underway, we believe it is time for a focused conversation on how this landmark decision affects the South—a region grappling with historical educational and economic disparities, compounded by a shifting political landscape. During the webinar, we will explore the legal restrictions imposed by the SCOTUS decision, examine the potential groundwork it lays for future actions, and strategize how philanthropic organizations and nonprofits doing equity work in the South can operate in this landscape--considering the legal, political, and public ramifications. https://lnkd.in/gGgRQVic

As the consulting space evolves, so do I. One part of my medium-term strategy at Five Oaks Consulting, Inc. (say, in the next 2-3 years) is to shift *part* of my practice by serving local Upstate New York clients - nonprofits and philanthropic organizations. Both those in rural and urban parts of Upstate New York. After 20 years of having lived in Upstate New York, which is part of what some choose to call the 'rustbelt region' of America, i.e. the region in the North East of America that has been economically and socially depressed for decades (though is also experiencing a slow but steady resurgence!), I feel that I have developed some credibility to do local/regional work. After all, the very same issues that my clients work on internationally -- social justice, poverty, discrimination, you name it -- play out just as much in my own region where I live. And the organizational development needs and pain points of clients are quite comparable, even if the particular context can vary distinctly for sure. One baby step in this direction: The Gifford Foundation based in Syracuse, NY, just added me to their website Resources page on Local Consultants. Thank you, Gifford Foundation! PS: to be clear - I intend to continue to do international work, but hope to gradually add this to my offerings 💪 https://lnkd.in/gFg7R42

Every quarter, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation's team works together to distill the most impactful stories to share with our community. Sometimes we have so much content that the website can barely keep up. When I first started in the nonprofit sector as a storyteller, the credo was "no one cares about the sausage making." With so many places to contribute your resources and a greater desire to see behind the curtain, we have a new challenge as nonprofit communications experts. The sector and our stakeholders want more than a report out on numbers and outcomes. Some things our stakeholders want to undertand include: • *how* and *why* we make the choices we make, and how we continue to learn and adapt to do things better (see the scholarships story by Dana Crary, TTCF Community Impact Manager), • the intentional partnerships that help funders realize our values statements instead of checking DEI boxes for PR (see the Washoe grant story), and • strategies that help donors make the most of every dollar for greater impact in the places that they care about (see the Philanthropies section and our $10 million matching grant). This impact report shares a lot more than all of that, and I am proud to be part of the team of staff, Board, partners, and donors who make this work possible and hold ourselves accountable to our community. Please enjoy. #communications #nonprofitcommunications #philanthropy #communityfoundation
