My 90-seconds of fame. It was such an honor and privilege to represent the V Foundation on ESPN during the Jimmy V Classic Basketball tournament. I got to jump hoops at Madison Square Garden but most importantly got to witness first hand the commitment that V foundation has to raise funds for cancer research. I proudly wore my University of Wisconsin-Madison Badgers Jersey. When St. Baldrick’s began, one early priority was to prevent a predicted shortage of trained pediatric oncology #researchers. We began by funding 2-3 years of training for St. Baldrick’s Fellows. But that wasn’t enough. Imagine you’ve spent 8 years or more in college and medical school, then 3 or more years in a fellowship training program… and now you must compete for scarce #research funding with scientists who have been at this for decades. Since 2008, St. Baldrick’s Scholar awards have given these well-trained young investigators 3-5 years of funding to make an impact in childhood #cancer research. During those years, they are also building a track record that can be used to obtain funds from National Cancer Institute (NCI) and others, preparing for many more years of discoveries leading to #cures. Without this award, some may have continued to treat patients, but lacked the funds to pursue new research ideas. Today, we are proud to see that many former St. Baldrick’s Scholars are recognized worldwide as leaders in their fields. Hats off to St. Baldrick’s #volunteers and #donors for making that possible! #researchishope #researchmatters #philanthropy

💡 STUDENT SPOTLIGHT 💡 This month, we’re featuring The University of Texas at Austin student and Philanthropy Chair of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity, Andrew Wilson. This year, he helped lead his chapter to raise over $20,000 to fight #ChildhoodCancer. Keep reading to learn more about Andrew’s involvement and dedication to the cause. Q: Why is fighting childhood cancer with B important to you? A: Each member of our ZBT chapter has been personally affected by cancer, whether through a family member or a friend. Our engagement with The B Foundation in the fight against childhood cancer is deeply meaningful to us. It goes beyond just providing essential support and funding for research; it cultivates a sense of unity and shared mission within our chapter, bringing us together for a profoundly noble and impactful endeavor. Q: What are you most looking forward to about your chapter’s partnership with B ? A: This year we welcomed our B Hero, Valentin, into our ZBT chapter. Spending time with our youngest and newest member has been a great experience. As we enter the second semester, we are very excited to create more memorable and enjoyable moments with Valentin and his family. We are also committed to intensifying our fundraising efforts to support even more families! Q: What is your best fundraising tip? A: My top fundraising advice is to choose an organization that genuinely resonates with you. When you're deeply invested in the cause, fundraising becomes more effortless and fulfilling, as you share a strong connection with the outcome that benefits the recipients.

VIDEO: HOST: Every day, 29-year-old Kurt Drysdale dreams of walking again. Just before his 21st birthday, a footy injury left him paralyzed from the neck down. KURT: I guess, you know, I was quite scared, and I was confused and sort of unsure what the future would hold for me. HOST: He needs a respirator to breathe. It's the little things Kurt wishes he could do again. KURT: Brushing your teeth, you know, picking up a cup, scratching my eyes. HOST: But Kurt's not one to give up. Six weeks after the accident, he made a decision. KURT'S MOTHER: Told me he was gonna breath on his own again. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. I can't fix this. HOST: A cure would mean the world. KURT'S FATHER: Ohhh everything. You know, we dream of it every day. HOST: That's where the work of the Perry Cross Foundation is hoping to make a difference. Perry himself is paralyzed. Now his foundation is working closely with researchers from Griffith University who could be on the verge of something big. PERRY: And now we think we have something that we can take to human trials. I'm very confident we can help repair the damage to the spinal cord. HOST: This world-first treatment begins with three months of preparation. Then in surgery, stem cells will be taken from the patient's nose. Those cells will be formulated into three-dimensional nerve bridges which are then transplanted back into the injury site, allowing the cells to regenerate. Eighteen months ago, researchers and Perry did their sums and knew then they'd need eight and a half million dollars to make this human trial a reality. PERRY: We've been able to raise $8 million. HOST: Two million of that is funded by the state government, the rest from the community. PERRY: And we're only half a million short. KURT: Once that's all come up, this all there, we can, you know, get the ball rolling. KURT'S FATHER: Definitely. A lot of positive stuff they're doing there, and it could be a real game changer. HOST: Optimistic, a cure isn't far away. PERRY: There's a very big clear green donate button on our website that people can get involved with. HOST: To give hope for so many, like Kurt. You are an inspiration, Kurt. KURT: Thank you.
We are on the cusp of finding a treatment for Spinal Cord Injuries. We have never been closer. Together, we have raised $8M to commence our world-first human clinical trial and today we are only $500,000 away from our final goal. Thank you 7NEWS Australia for coming out and meeting our ambassador Kurt and his family, along with our founder Perry Cross AM, to talk about how our foundation is working with Griffith University to find a cure for Spinal Cord Injuries. Every donation counts. Please contribute to help us start our human clinical trial for 15 people living with paralysis later this year. All donations above $2 are tax-deductible. #sci #cure #paralysis #humanclinicaltrials #donate Clem Jones Centre for Neurobiology and Stem Cell Research

🏆It is hard to believe, but our third annual HOD Awareness day is just two short months away. Let’s do something different this year, shall we? In Year One, we did our “I Am HOD” campaign. In Year Two, we did “Happy Birthday, HODA!” In Year Three, we want the community to be involved in creating our celebration campaign. 🤔What on earth does that mean? Well, we want YOU to have a say in how we shape the campaign for this year. We have some ideas, of course! We think it would be better to incorporate your ideas this year. 🎉Intimidated? Don’t be! There are no wrong answers here. This year, we really want community involvement, and we would like to leverage the milestone as a fundraiser too. HODA has big dreams for our community, and we need your help in achieving those goals. 🚀Did we convince you yet? Expect to be in a few virtual meetings (via Zoom) to toss ideas around with other community members and board members, and eventually iron out details. Be a part of the community roll out, and get ready to feel like a part of something bigger! If you are longing to feel like you have a purpose, sign up! Join us! We want to hear from you! #HypertrophicOlivaryDegeneration #HOD #HODHeroes #HODAwareness #MakingHODHistory #NeuroScience #HODAwarenessDay

What are your key ingredients for success in 2024? In my talks, I share 3 disciplines for success about lessons learned through persevering through brain cancer after I graduated college in 1999, life, community, business, and beyond. Grateful to still be around 😉 The 3 disciplines are... CLARITY, COMMITMENT, COMMUNITY (Watch the video for a deeper dive) Coincidentally 2024 is the 10th year anniversary since I self-published my book, For A Reason. A great milestone opportunity to make some noise, as my friend Dan Migala would say. I'm donating 100% of all book sales to and speaking fees to My Hometown Heroes, Inc. in our effort to achieve a lofty fundraising goal which would be to fund $100,000 in scholarships for college-bound cancer survivors. A large part of the COMMITMENT component is to continually share my story, lessons and knowledge learned through overcoming the odds, and being available for those opportunities - whether on LinkedIn, on-stage, publications, and virtually. Whatever it takes. I believe clarity on one big goal is the driving force to achieve everything else. What are you key ingredients for 2024?

What is ResearcHERS? ResearcHERS gives influential women the opportunity to help raise funds for some of the country’s most exciting cancer research projects led by women. Simply put, it’s women fundraising to support women-led research. Women bring diverse and unique perspectives to cancer research, making invaluable contributions and discoveries. However, women are continuously underrepresented in research leadership. We want to change that. As a program of the American Cancer Society - a top supporter of women in cancer research - we can sustain the pipeline of talent and engage those in the field to help impact the number of women in leadership roles. But we need your help to do it. Interested in joining us to support women-led cancer research?? Let's connect! #ResearcHERS #cancerresearch #Indiana https://lnkd.in/gBdixfJS
