In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re spotlighting The 345, our men’s housing program that occupies the former space of the historic 1950s-era Black-owned Danzig Motel. The building was originally built by O.T. Bell in 1959, and was one of the only operating Black-owned motels in Atlanta. In transforming the dilapidated property into The 345, we wanted to keep our focus on Westside neighborhood residents. The goal is to bolster the availability of affordable solutions for existing residents, the majority of whom are Black, who have long endured a blighted neighborhood with scarce quality housing options. “The 345 is just one example of how we are working to uncover and restore critical pillars of this community by tackling one of its most pervasive issues: lack of affordable housing,” said Bruce Deel, Founder and CEO of City of Refuge. As rents and home prices continue to rise, The 345 is one of our first iterations of our goal to create housing opportunities where displacement poses a threat to legacy residents. Since The 345 opened in May 2023, we’ve housed over 30 residents. BRILLIANT! Finally a potential and practical solution to Vancouver’s housing crisis. Tomo House offers new housing choices that aim to design multi-family housing that nurture strong, supportive SOCIAL relationships. Feeling connected to our communities, neighbours, and friends is fundamental to people’s wellbeing. The homes that we live in should reflect this. To support the health and happiness of its future residents, Tomo House draws inspiration from community housing models, like cohousing and co-operative housing. This project combines a small cluster of homes with indoor and outdoor social spaces. It will house 12 families under one roof, with a common house and courtyard. It reduces the parking burden, because folks who share don’t own as many cars. It reflects the aspirations of a deeply committed community of future residents. And it will offer deep affordability to a third of those residents, through reduced purchase price or guaranteed rental rates, over the long term. Tomo House offers a new housing choice—in its building form, tenure model, and social wellbeing approach—that is definitely scalable and reproducible in many neighbourhoods. The concept of Co-operative housing in India and Co-housing are similar. But co-housing is a bit more advanced and suitable because of its core being support each other like childcare. Loved this concept

Cohousing is an interesting concept. These developments look like another great way to build moderately dense housing.

The potential is immense.

How Long Does It Take Evict Tenant? It depends upon the reason for eviction and the length of the tenant’s occupancy This all depends on if your tenant decides to contest the matter or not. On average, it’s a 50/50 percent on cases being contested or defaulted. If the tenant does not respond or contest the matter, possession is granted by default. If the tenant does respond, then possession is granted by the judgment at trial. BALTIMORE: DRUID HILL PARK POOL NO. 2 Built: 1921 Desegregated: 1955 Drained: 1956 Public pools were common in American cities before the 1950s and most were officially “whites only”. When the Supreme Court declared segregated access to public amenities (such as pools) to be unconstitutional, cities circumvented integration by simply removing the amenities for everybody. In short, rather than integrate public pools, many cities decided to demolish them altogether. Subsequently, beginning in the 60s, there was an explosion in the popularity of backyard swimming pools in the suburbs which were, of course, mostly whites-only due to restrictive covenants and exclusionary zoning. In the name of racism and avoiding integration, American cities effectively eliminated a public good and privatised it for only those who could afford it.
