We love to see others in the industry approach value-based care models with enthusiasm. In a recent op-ed for Modern Healthcare, Optum Chief Clinical Officer Daniel Frank, MD, details his firsthand experiences working in a physician's office under a fee-for-service arrangement vs value-based care. In his words: "In my early years of practicing medicine in a traditional FFS construct, I remember feeling frustrated when a patient would come in for one issue, and it was clear that there were others we should address as well. But our model didn’t allow for that,” said Dr. Frank. “It was more about how many patients I was seeing versus why I went into medicine in the first place, to help patients live their healthiest lives. So, when I was given the opportunity to join a practice model that allowed for comprehensive patient care, I took it.” His op-ed details three things for providers to think about when adopting VBC models. We agree with Dr. Frank’s assessment that true value-based care cannot and should not be managed by the physician alone, but requires a “whole village” approach, including resources that support patients outside the four walls of the physician's office.
