Do you have a canine friend that could brighten other people's days? Why not get those soft eyes and wagging tail a new place to spread joy? East Central Therapy Dog volunteers and their dogs visit our friends in long-term care, retirement homes, PRHC, Hospice and VON Day Programs to share friendship and the unconditional love of our dogs. They provide friendship and the unconditional love of our dogs with our clients in those facilities. Petting a dog can lower blood pressure and encourage relaxation. It can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve mood. It can calm and distract from pain. A visit from our dogs can help clients cope with health problems and provide comfort and enjoyment. Our weekly visits reduce loneliness by building friendships with our clients. Meanwhile, you will meet interesting new people and develop new friendships. And you will see the positive impact you and your dog have on our clients and our community. I have learned over the years that, creating a supportive environment for volunteers is very important. From my experience managing people and projects, I've found that a few key things can help: First off, it's important to understand that volunteers have other commitments, so we must respect their time and efforts. Yes, they shouldn't be overburdened. Secondly, we need to see mistakes as opportunities for growth and learning. They'll make mistakes. A lot of it. So, giving room for errors and not always focusing on criticism first can make a big difference. Thirdly, we must remember that some people tend to take time to get settled within the team and fully understand their roles. Providing support throughout can really help to speed up the process. Lastly, letting volunteers know that they are valued, supported, and cared for is essential for creating a positive and supportive environment. Genuinely caring for and supporting volunteers in their personal pursuits can boost their overall engagement and performance. #tobatalks #themedutainer #volunteering #Volunteers

Just like employees, volunteers who show up and focus on their work are worth their weight in gold. Even if they don’t get paid, they take the job seriously. Did you know that one volunteer hour brings $32 in value to an organization? That's right. Just ask Volunteer Canada. Many volunteer projects rely on a specific time frame, such as helping at an event or getting a task done. You need to meet deadlines and shift to new tasks as the landscape changes. Experienced volunteers do that without missing a beat. If a volunteer struggles, take time for a candid conversation. Perhaps something has gone amiss at home or they’ve lost their groove. Getting them back on track pays off with everyone working more happily. A simple 'thank you' reminds volunteers how much you appreciate them.
