Progress on Alzheimer's Disease stagnating, warns federation chief Progress on Alzheimer's Disease and dementia is stagnating, Alzheimer Disease International CEO Paola Barbarino has warned. Despite these rising figures, Barbarino, who leads Alzheimer's Disease International a worldwide federation of Alzheimer associations, finds herself needing to constantly remind governments to pay more attention to this condition. Alzheimer Europe, an NGO that aims to make dementia a European priority, has noticed what it described as "a deprioritisation of dementia as a policy issue in recent years". https://lnkd.in/e88RmhJK #PublicHealth #Europe #StayInformed #StayEmpowered

Across the world, over 55 million people are affected by dementia – a diagnosis that is terminal. Dementia is caused by a number of different diseases, with the most common being Alzheimer’s disease. We know Alzheimer’s can start to cause changes in the brain up to 20 years before symptoms appear. Sadly, this means many people are diagnosed too late to benefit from new emerging treatments that could significantly slow the condition. World Alzheimer’s Day is a time to celebrate how far research has taken us in detecting, diagnosing and treating this disease. The same momentum now needs to be matched by policymakers across the world. Policies to ensure access to the latest diagnostics and treatments will mean that people in the earliest stages of dementia can be supported, before the disease has progressed. Alzheimer's disease is a prevalent and significant public health concern worldwide. As the elderly population continues to grow, the number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease will too. Currently (in 2023), 6.7 million Americans age 65 and older have Alzheimer's disease. By 2050, that number is projected to reach 12.7 million. Efforts to raise awareness, improve early detection, enhance treatment options, and invest in research are critical to addressing the challenges posed by Alzheimer's disease. With ongoing research and public health initiatives, we hope to gain a better understanding of the disease and develop effective strategies to support individuals living with Alzheimer's and their families.
