🌾A revolutionary discovery in Rice Research to address the increasing prevalence of diabetes.🌾 🍚. International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), a #CGIAR Research Centre, have identified the genes accountable for low and ultra-low glycemic index (GI) in rice. 🍚. According to International Diabetes Federation, there were 537 million people with diabetes in 2021. This is expected to go up 47% by 2047 Many rice varieties have GI ranging from 70 to 92, which is not considered healthy for people with diabetes. The ultra-low GI has a level of 44. 🍚. This scientific advancement results from an extensive collaboration between IRRI scientists at the organization's global headquarters supported by the Philippine government and the IRRI South Asia Regional Centre in Varanasi. 🍚. Previously, IRRI pinpointed two low glycemic index (GI) Philippine strains, IRRI 147 and IRRI 125, which were introduced in the Philippines as salt-tolerant varieties. In a cohort study involving clinical validation with human volunteers, IRRI 147 displayed a GI value of 55, while IRRI 125 exhibited a GI value of 51.1. 🍚. For the first time in Malaysia, a study results on the Anti-SARS-CoV-2 and Anti-inflammatory Activities of Marantodes pumilum Aqueous Ethanolic Standardized Extract (SKF7®) led by Dr. Mohd Ridzuan Mohd Abd Razak from the Herbal Medicine Research Centre, Institute for Medical Research, National Institutes of Health will be presented at the 24th NIH Scientific Conference on August 22nd and 23rd, 2023. The in-vitro study demonstrated that the M. pumilum standardized extract, SKF7®, exhibited anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity against both the WT Wuhan and the omicron SARS-CoV-2 infections. #SSETS #SharingMyResearchOnSSETS I will be sharing one of my original research findings with you this week titled; ''Effect of Combination Therapy of Garcinia kola seed and Vitamin E in Acetaminophen Induced Hepato toxicity and Oxidative Stress in Albino Rats.'' Acetaminophen is one of the available drugs that is been abused by its usage. Though, it is used to treat fever and pains. It has been reported to exhibit toxic side effects when taken in overdoses. In this study, it was used to induced hepato toxicity and oxidative stress in albino rats. On the other hand, Garcinia kola seed aqueous extract and Vitamin E were given to these rats before the inducement in singly and combined treatment formulations/ doses and duration. It was observed that the combined form of pretreatment showed no significant synergistic effect in ameliorating the hepato toxicity and oxidative stress compared to the singly pretreatment with either Garcinia kola seed or Vitamin E.Therefore combining Garcinia kola and Vitamin E may lost its ameliorative and protective effect as seen in this induced acetaminophen albino rats implying that Garcinia kola seed and Vitamin E should not be taken in a combined form. NATURAL HONEY WITH GLIBENCLAMIDE IMPROVES HYPERGLYCAEMIA BETTER THAN GLIBENCLAMIDE ALONE ___ Getahun Tsegaye Dibaba from the Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia presented a paper entitled “Effect of natural Honey on biochemical markers in STZ-induced diabetic mice” Their study concluded that consuming natural honey with glibenclamide improves hyperglycaemia, and causes a change in lipid profile than consuming glibenclamide alone. Artemisia annua stems and leaves were commonly used to treat malaria in ancient times. Modern Chinese medicine analysis found that artemisia annua stems and leaves can treat malaria because artemisinin is rich in them. Artemisinin is one of the best drugs to treat malaria resistance and has been recognized internationally. The traditional process is to #extract artemisinin from gasoline, which has some problems such as low yield, high cost and safety risk. In the past, China's artemisinin extraction #technology was relatively backward, and China's artemisinin drugs only accounted for 0.5% of the international market share. In recent years, with the development of supercritical carbon dioxide fluid #extraction technology in China, the market share of artemisinin drugs in China is increasing. The Power of Three Kingdoms! Lungwort (Lobaria pulmonaria) is an epiphytiuc lichen that looks like a leaf, but is made up of three organisms from three kingdoms living together—it consists of a fungus (ascomycete), a green algae and cyanobacterium…wrap your brain around that! It was named because of its resemblance to lungs, and in accordance to the herbal “doctrine of signatures”, was used for afflictions of the lungs in herbal medicine. Lungwort is widely distributed throughout the world, present in Europe, North America, Africa and Asia; mostly in damp habitats. Not only has it been used as a medicine, but in foods, as an ingredient in brewing, the manufacture of perfumes, to produce an orange dye for wool, and for leather tanning. Lungwort is considered GRAS in the US as a flavoring. As it is highly sensitive to pollution, and sulfur dioxide in particular, its populations have declined significantly, especially in lowland areas. Lungwort has a long history of use in herbal medicine, and has been used for various lung afflictions, such as asthma, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. Lungwort has also been used for eczema and hemorrhage, as an antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory. Through scientific investigation Lungwort has been found to have anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, antimicrobial, antiulcer, GI-protective, anti-acetylcholinesterase and antioxidant activities.
