Research Nova Scotia aims to harness the imagination and expertise of the research community to help Nova Scotia solve some of its biggest challenges. That’s why in 2020, we adopted a mission-oriented approach to research funding. A mission-oriented approach starts with what we want to accomplish and builds a research agenda and coalition of partners to help achieve these goals. Gùdia - Mary Jane Johnson is one of five authors who worked together to write the paper “Towards Reconciliation: 10 Calls to Action to Natural Scientists Working in Canada”. The paper was founded in frustration, friendship and hope. The calls are meant to help researchers move toward reconciliation. The authors focused on natural scientists because a common connection to the land should tie them more closely to Indigenous communities than currently exists. They also focused on natural sciences because of the underrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in this field. Scientists share in Canadians’ collective responsibility to feed the fires of reconciliation — to shift the power balance and meet the needs of Indigenous peoples and communities. The 10 calls to action outlined in the research paper translate the recommendations of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission into concrete actions and approaches scientists can take on an institutional and individual level. 📣 Demagog (Poland) as a part of the Central European Digital Media Observatory (CEDMO) project was created to fight disinformation in the Central European region. As part of the project, we check, among other things, the statements of politicians. 👀 Stowarzyszenie Demagog looked at a post shared by Konrad Berkowicz from PiS and reviewed it as manipulation. 💡 CEDMO's greatest strength is its diverse team of researchers from the sciences as well as the humanities and social sciences, working together with journalists and fact-checkers - because the problem of disinformation is inherently multidisciplinary and requires looking at it from multiple points of view. #TogetherAgainstDisinformation 🔎 Read the analysis: https://lnkd.in/dkfJbEke

This book was published in January, but because I was travelling I only laid hands on it yesterday. It was very difficult to write and to finish, but I am so pleased I did. It is an analysis of the economic foundations of eighteenth century Moravian missions in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, St Thomas in the Caribbean, and Greenland. Three very different contexts with very different economic opportunities. The book is the result of my Gerda Henkel research grant from 2016-2018.

As part of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we are encouraging all in our community and across Canada to reflect on and engage with the poignant history and enduring spirit of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. As an organization founded in academia, and with a strong grounding within Canadian universities, we must reconcile the role of the education system in the history of Residential Schools, as well as with the related barriers to access within STEM that Indigenous people in Canada have faced and continue to face. As the Chair of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission, the Honourable Murray Sinclair has said, “Education has gotten us into this mess, and education will get us out.” In that spirit, here are a few resources we’ve been sharing and engaging with: https://native-land.ca/ is a free tool that maps Indigenous lands in a way that changes, challenges, and improves the way people see history and the present day. Enroll in the free online course 'Weaving Relations' by UBC Faculty of Applied Science and the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. Weaving Relations explores Indigenous histories, people, and contexts, as well as settler colonialism in Canada, through the lens of Indigenous-Canadian relationships. The course considers how we got to where we are now, and how we can build a better future together. Indigenous Canada is a University of Alberta program that explores the different histories and contemporary perspectives of Indigenous peoples living in Canada: https://lnkd.in/g6KVsGqp

Valuable initiative and important area of cooperation, dialogue and creation of synergies: Science-policy dialogue in the Andes. I found the key insights quite relevant in any knowledge (and wisdom) transfer process to face the local and global challenges: "Participants expressed a genuine interest in solving environmental and social problems through collaborative information and knowledge generation. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Current conditions necessitate collaboration not only among peers but also across disciplines. Community Involvement: Knowledge co-production experiences involving local communities enhance decision-making. Results Socialization: It is essential to share research results with diverse audiences, encouraging action. Cooperative Action: Collaborative efforts are crucial for effective socio-ecosystem management." https://lnkd.in/eBe7Rhrq
