Presidential debate (June 27, 2024) CNN will host the first general election presidential debate on June 27, 2024. President Joe Biden (D) and former President Donald Trump (R) were the only two candidates who qualified. The debate will be 90 minutes with two commercial breaks. Candidates' microphones will be muted until it is their turn to speak, and there will be no studio audience present for the debate. To qualify, a candidate had to meet certain constitutional, ballot access, and polling requirements. Click here to learn more about them. Biden and Trump agreed to participate in the CNN debate on May 15, 2024. This debate is not hosted by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD). This is the first time the major party presidential candidates have both declined to participate in debates hosted by the CPD since the organization was founded in 1987. It looks like President Biden may back out of live debates, a tradition in place since 1976. What do you think his excuse will be? ABC News, CBS News, CNN Fox News Media, PBS, NBC News, NPR, The Associated Press, C-SPAN, NewsNation, Univision, USA TODAY, The Epoch Times and Newsmax Media, Inc. have all recently talked about both Trump and Biden needing to commit to these debates. The first debate is scheduled for Sept. 16 at Texas State University in San Marcos, followed on Oct. 1 at Virginia State University in Petersburg and Oct. 9 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, but some would’ve already voted by mail at these points, so there’s a request from the Trump Campaign to move them up, before anyone votes by mail. I think that it shows disrespect to the citizen voters, to not be willing to show up for debates. If someone can’t manage this, they can’t manage the Executive Branch and command our military. I DON'T DO POLITICS... this is our theme for June. In 2004 the UK’s Electoral Commission ran an ad called ‘I don’t do politics’, intended to show how it affects all aspects of society, and to ignore it would be to one’s own detriment. In January Al Jazeera ran an article on ‘the year of elections’, and asked ‘if 2024 is democracy’s biggest test ever?’ So for June we explore political and public sector marketing and how, by extension, it impacts the media and the people. To kick off our theme we have articles from Kevin Chesters on Thatcher and the 1979 general election, Josh Mcloughlin, PhD on what brands can learn from political marketing, Richard Shotton on questions and effective headlines, Jenni Romaniuk on re-thinking political advertising, and Becks Collins (he/they) wondering where all the Pride campaigns have gone. We also asked Simon Gregory, Alice P., Hanni Bateman, Laurent Simon and Chris Woodward whether political slogans need a rebrand. Imagine going to the polls to vote on election day, and instead of receiving a government-printed ballot with directions to your own (indoor) private voting booth, you instead wait in line outside, your name gets called in front of everyone, and you yell out your political choices for all to hear. This was the practice in a number of states in the 19th century.
