What are you doing this Mandela Day?    For the benefit of Irish readers, Mandela Day is an annual global celebration that takes place on 18 July to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. This day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organisations to reflect on Mandela's values and principles and positively impact their communities.    No matter how small your action, Mandela Day is about changing the world for the better, just as Nelson Mandela did every day. #ItIsInYourHands    This year you can get involved no matter where you live! On Saturday, 20 July, you can take part in the virtual part of the Mandela Day Walk & Run 2024, where you can choose to walk or run 5km, 10km, or 21km from anywhere in the world. How to Participate Virtually? https://lnkd.in/eQfNivTh     The Irish South African heritage is based on a long history of collective support:  The Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement was instrumental in advocating for sanctions and raising awareness about the injustices in South Africa.   Many prominent South African exiles, such as Kader Asmal, who later became a minister in Nelson Mandela's government, found refuge in Ireland. Asmal also contributed significantly to the anti-apartheid movement while teaching at Trinity College Dublin.   Thabo Mbeki, who became South Africa's second post-apartheid president, also spent time in Ireland.   Additionally, parts of the Freedom Charter, which laid the foundation for South Africa's democratic constitution, were drafted in Dublin.    Shared values of justice, equality, and human rights mark our history. Today, we continue to be bound by these moral beliefs, working together towards a brighter and more equitable future.    Let's not limit our celebration of Mandela's legacy to just one day. On this Mandela Day, we celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, a towering figure in the fight for freedom, equality, and human dignity. South Africa, and indeed the world, owes a profound debt to Madiba, whose unwavering commitment to justice and reconciliation continues to inspire us today. This Mandela Day, 17 more trees will find their roots at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (“GIBS”), with each tree representing one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) set by the United Nations. This is a testament to the interconnectedness of environmental stewardship, social progress, and economic well-being. In Mandela's spirit, we must dedicate ourselves to combining our efforts to meeting the 2030 targets set our in each of the SDGs. Despite the immense challenges, they remained steadfast in their commitment to justice and equality.Mandela, with his unwavering resolve and charismatic leadership, emerged as a towering figure in the anti-apartheid movement. He never forgot the invaluable support and guidance he received from Tambo. As the founder of the African National Congress Youth League, Tambo played a pivotal role in shaping Mandela's political consciousness and activism.Upon Mandela's release and South Africa's transition to democracy, their partnership took on new significance. Mandela, now President of a free South Africa, leaned on Tambo's diplomatic prowess and strategic insight as he navigated the complexities of post-apartheid governance.Their enduring friendship and collaboration serve as a testament to the transformative power of mentorship in African leadership. THE GREATEST AFRICAN HERO Nelson Mandela, an icon of justice and reconciliation, played an instrumental role in dismantling the racial discrimination system known as apartheid in South Africa. Born on July 18, 1918, in Qunu, he grew up with a strong sense of fairness and morality. He pursued law and became actively involved with the African National Congress, campaigning against the oppressive regime. In 1962, Mandela's commitment to equality led to his arrest and subsequent 27-year imprisonment. Despite the harsh conditions and personal hardships, he remained steadfast in his beliefs. His imprisonment became a rallying cry for anti-apartheid activists worldwide. Upon his release in 1990, Mandela continued to fight for equality and played a crucial role in the peaceful transition to a democratic South Africa. His magnanimity and willingness to forgive those who had oppressed him was nothing short of extraordinary. In 1994, Mandela was elected South Africa's first Black president, a testament to his leadership and the love and respect he commanded from his fellow countrymen. Mandela's presidency focused on healing and rebuilding a divided nation. His efforts were recognized globally, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize 1993. After serving a single term as president, he advocated for peace, human rights, and social justice until his death on December 5, 2013. His life story is a testament to the power of determination, forgiveness, and love in the face of adversity. His work motivates individuals and communities to strive for a more just and compassionate world, honoring his enduring vision of harmony and human dignity.
