🌐 Accessibility in the News: Feds Propose Rules For Web Accessibility We're excited to share an important development in the world of web accessibility that has the potential to significantly impact the lives of individuals with disabilities. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has taken a monumental step by introducing the first-ever proposed rules to ensure the accessibility of websites and mobile apps for people with disabilities. In a recent article by Shaun Heasley, titled "Feds Propose Rules For Web Accessibility," the DOJ announced its notice of proposed rulemaking under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). According to recent research, almost all American websites do not adhere to the accessibility standards for those with disabilities, which is concerning as COVID-19 is forcing many parts of everyday life to move online. According to the 2020 Web Accessibility Annual Report compiled by the accessible initiative, which examined over 10 million webpages to assess their compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (2.1 WCAG), 98% of U.S.-based webpages are not legally accessible to the disability community. Regarding different parts of websites, 98 percent of websites do not follow the WCAG requirements; this includes pictures (52 percent), pop-ups (89 percent), forms (71 percent), icons (76 percent), buttons (83 percent), and links (22 percent). If when on your mobile phone you land on a website that is not usable, do you stay? Of course not. It is a similar situation when a person with a disability lands on a site that is not adapted.♿ An ADA-compliant website provides accessibility to persons with disabilities. Just like ramps where there are stairs and adapted bathrooms. Websites are just as important.🌐 Expand your audience The more people are drawn to your website, the larger the likelihood that you will see the results you want.📈 People with disabilities get excited about a website that they can access and tell all their friends and family about it. That's free advertising for your company.🗣️ People who believe in accessibility for the disabled will think well of your business and are more likely to become customers. It's inclusive Inclusivity in the true sense leaves no one out. 🤝 There are 61 million adults with disabilities in the US, or 1 in 4 adults. Many need adaptations in a website to use it. 💻 Adaptations include: -All images have ALT descriptions. 📝 -Ability to enlarge the font without it going off the screen. 🔍 -Keyboard navigation. ⌨️ -And so much more. Open the door for people with disabilities who have over 1 Trillion dollars in spending power!💰 Avoid lawsuits There were over 8,000 web accessibility lawsuits from 2017-2020, according to the American Bar Association. ⚖️ This includes businesses of all sizes. It's the right thing to do. 👏 It's a good feeling to know you are being inclusive of people with disabilities. Breaking news in the US: The Justice Department has published a notice of proposed rulemaking under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This proposed rule would provide a specific technical standard that state and local governments would have to follow to meet their obligations under the ADA for web and mobile app accessibility. I.e., they're finally going to clarify what is required in the same way that other laws around the world reference WCAG. This will only apply to public websites, not private websites, but it is an important step in achieving digital equality and could lay the foundation for better clarifying how private businesses need to meet web accessibility laws under the ADA. is an essential aspect.” A revolutionary concept, I’m sure you’ll agree. Surely, it must have been coined recently, now that accessibility is getting centre-stage in view of forthcoming legislation. Do you know who said this, and when? I could do something clever here, such as set up a poll or a challenge with prizes… but why would I do that, when you can all just copy and paste into Google and find out for yourselves: It was Tim Berners-Lee, in 1997. In case you don’t know, Berners-Lee is an English computer scientist generally credited with being the inventor of the World Wide Web. (As well as the HTML markup language, the URL system, and HTTP) In October 1997, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) announced the launch of the International Program Office (IPO) for the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) to promote and achieve Web functionality for people with disabilities. That’s when Berners-Lee made the revolutionary statement I opened this post with. 37 years later, here we still are, doing our very best to make the web accessible by everyone, regardless of disability. And why wouldn’t we do that? We want everyone to be able to buy our shizzle, don’t we? We are all, after all, just people behind a keyboard, doing our best not to be dicks. The Worldwide Web Consortium approved WCAG 2.2 as the most up-to-date international standard for web accessibility. WCAG guidelines played an important role when it comes to legal compliance with legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act.
