As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we're encouraging our employees to share their stories! Meet Yilian Leon, Accounting Q: What does Hispanic heritage mean to you and how has your heritage shaped who you are today? A: Hispanic heritage to me is those individuals who are Spanish-speaking or rooted from Spanish- speaking countries. My culture/heritage has instilled in me the value of family, strong work ethic, and personal responsibility. That is why as a professional I am about working as a team and portraying my values in the workplace. Q: What is something you wish others knew about Hispanic heritage? A: While Hispanic people have different histories and cultures, we are united through our shared language of “Spanish”. I also believe for most Hispanics family is the most crucial above all else; that is why we work very hard and stride to learn and better ourselves for our wellbeing and our families. We are not afraid to take up challenges and speak up when help is needed. Q: What advice (personal or professional) would you give to others of Hispanic/Latino heritage? A: The best advice I can give a Hispanic/Latino is to embrace their culture. To never forget their roots and always push forward. That no matter what circumstances come our way we have fighting blood; we will make it through. I would also advise spreading your roots wherever you settle down and becoming a pillar of your community. Q: What are some of the things you love most about your Hispanic heritage? (Or what are you most of proud of regarding your Hispanic heritage?) A: As a Cuban I believe Hispanics are well known for our diverse and flavorful food and I cannot reutter family enough. Wherever there is family, there is good food, music, and lots of love. Something I also love about the Hispanic heritage is that we don’t need to know someone personally to try and make them feel at home. #SomosNWR #HispanicHeritage #AllIn #NWRLiving #NWR #NorthwoodRavin

September is Hispanic Heritage Month. The theme is 'Prosperity, Power, and Progress', recognizing the significant achievements of the Hispanic community in economic and political industries. Meet Fernando Bleichmar, AP's CEO, and find out what Hispanic Heritage Month means to him. How has your heritage shaped the person you are today? As I imagine for all of us, my heritage has affected me in all parts of my personality. I was born in Argentina, grew up in Mexico, and then migrated to the US, so I have a lot of the traits of immigrants: optimism, resilience, desire for better outcomes, and adaptability. Also, as a minority CEO, I feel a tremendous responsibility to create a company and a culture that is inclusive and helps advance the careers of all our employees. Does your family have any traditions that are especially important to you? My family is made up of three generations of immigrants (grandparents, parents, myself, and my siblings) so, although we don’t have a certain set of traditions that we hold very strongly to, we do have a melding of a lot of celebrations and traditions. I guess our most valued tradition is that we get together every year for a week to enjoy being with each other. What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? For me, it's an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate my heritage. How can we continue to raise awareness of Hispanic Heritage Month? I think creating an inclusive environment where we intentionally learn about other cultures and people helps to create awareness – it all comes back to education. Do you have a favorite Hispanic leader/icon? I have always admired Benito Juarez, who was a Mexican president that grew up in poverty and did extraordinary things for the country. More recently, having Sonia Sotomayor as a Supreme Court Justice felt like a really important moment for the Hispanic community. #Hispanicheritage #Hispanicheritagemonth #OneAP

**Understanding the History:** Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th, marking the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence in September. This historical significance sets the stage for a month-long celebration of Hispanic culture, history, and accomplishments. **Get Involved:** There are many ways to participate in Hispanic Heritage Month. Attend local events, explore Hispanic cuisine, read books by Hispanic authors, and engage in conversations to learn more about the diverse backgrounds within the Hispanic community. By doing so, we not only celebrate the past but also build bridges for a more culturally enriched future. Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us that diversity is not just a source of strength; it's a wellspring of inspiration. It's a celebration of the countless stories, traditions, and dreams that have shaped our world. Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans with ancestry (or who themselves hail) from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Throughout the month, many companies and organizations voice their support of these communities via internal and external campaigns and initiatives. How can these celebrations be done authentically and mindfully? ⭐ Do your research. Learn about the different Hispanic and Latino cultures and communities and avoid generalizations. The Hispanic and Latino community is not monolithic. ⭐ Be respectful. Steer clear of tokenism, stereotypes, and appropriation. Avoid singling out or otherizing Hispanic and Latino employees. Don't pressure them to participate in or plan events. Be mindful of your language and imagery. ⭐ Involve Hispanic and Latino employees – if they are interested. Ask if and how employees would like to be involved. For those who want to participate, request input on how to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in a way that is meaningful to them. Understand that this is a uniquely American observance and may not carry the same weight or meaning for every Hispanic or Latino individual. ⭐ Make it fun and educational. Use your initiatives to teach people about Hispanic and Latino culture and the community’s contributions and impact on the U.S. Make sure your efforts are enjoyable and engaging. ⭐ Be consistent. Don't just celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month once a year. Show your support for Hispanic and Latino communities all year long in various ways. How are you authentically celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in the workplace this year? Share your ideas in the comments below!
