Last week, we concluded Part 1 of the Sustainathon at GEA in Søborg. This event tapped into GEA's vast university network to promote both collaboration and innovation in sustainability. Here is the approach we used to increase the chances of creating a substantial impact: *The Sustainathon is not just a single event, but a process. *A carefully chosen topic outlining a real and important business problem. *Transdisciplinary teams across six universities. *GEA experts joined the teams, not as team leads, but as coaches to transfer knowledge and keep it real and business relevant. *Participants had time to explore and understand the topic and technology before ideating. *Asynchronous ideation, discussion, and team alignment on ideas before the workshop. *A 'fail fast, learn fast' approach throughout the three days. *Engaging stakeholders early to refine ideas and direction. *Post-event planning for ongoing collaboration and knowledge transfer. Special thanks go out to the participants from six different universities. Additionally, thank you to: • Jakob Sloth Overgaard for your openness and networking skills, which brought together great minds. • Søren Jensen for your razor-sharp insights and stellar presentation. • Kristine Veilleux for seamlessly making it happen and managing all the logistics. • Thilde Nørgaard for invaluable support in planning and communication • Sebastian Cadell for expertly coaching through Nosco's eight aspects of idea maturation. Transforming the industry with innovation! 🌍✨ Here are some new photos of Steelanol's pioneering technology at our site in Ghent. Here, industrial gases are converted into sustainable ethanol. 🌿🔄   🎯 Objective: By capturing carbon-rich process gases and converting them into ethanol, Steelanol contributes to decarbonising the steel industry.   🔧 How it works: This innovative process, developed by LanzaTech, uses microorganisms to ferment gases, resulting in ethanol. From transport fuels to clothing and perfume, the possibilities are endless. Steelanol enables a new form of industrial symbiosis, where we connect industries by not burning gases from steel production for energy but using them as feedstock for other sectors.    🌍 Environmental impact: The Steelanol plant has an annual capacity to produce 80 million litres of ethanol, about half of Belgium's total current demand. It is then expected to reduce our carbon emissions by 125,000 tonnes per year, bringing us closer to the EU's 2030 Climate Target Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by the end of the decade. #InsideEcoclean 💬 Last week our Managing Director Michael Förster welcomed Oliver Paasch, Prime Minister of the German-speaking Community of Belgium and Dr. Carmen Krämer, Mayor of the city of Monschau to our site. During the company visit the strong diversification of the SBS Ecoclean Group became visible. Looking back, just around three years ago the Center of Competence in Monschau was mainly supplying the automotive industry with industrial parts cleaning systems for combustion engine parts and components. With the structural change in the automotive sector, Ecoclean already set course towards diversification in 2017. Not only locally in Monschau but within the whole Group. Today, in addition to our “classic cleaning business”, we are successfully developing special parts cleaning solutions for many other industries such as MedTech, High-tech and High Purity, and Precision Manufacturing.   🌱 And that’s not enough: a completely new area is the development and production of alkaline electrolysis systems for the generation of green hydrogen. With the EcoLyzer we strive to support industry, mobility and communities on their way to a sustainable future as a global system integrator. “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” This quote by Mark Twain perfectly captures the spirit of Siemens Financial Services, EIT InnoEnergy and further strategic partners uniting forces when launching FertigHy less than a year ago. As a new player in the European fertilizer industry, FertigHy aims to produce one million metric tons of low-carbon fertilizers annually. While striving to reduce CO2 emissions this also exemplifies how strong collaboration in the broader ecosystem can unlock sustainability impact. The power of such multi-stakeholder #partnerships stood at the center of my discussion with InnoEnergy Benelux CEO Jacob Ruiter and Siemens Spain CEO Agustin Escobar at this year's Hannover Messe. We particularly emphasized smart approaches empowering key industry verticals to accelerate #sustainable industrial transformation. I truly enjoyed our thoughtful exchange, as it highlighted the super-power that comes from pooling resources and expertise – be it entrepreneurial, technological, or financial.
