It sounds simple enough: rate, rank and select, but the reality is not so simple. Insufficient information, high uncertainty, biases, company history and politics are all factors that influence decision making. Decision-making is complex, but there are some things you can do to make it easier: 👀 Involve the right people in the evaluation process: go abroad those with the right knowledge, and include those with the mandate and power to push ideas forward 🔎 Build a simple and transparent process for evaluation: avoid complex rating systems and focus on a few simple criteria that are communicated upfront 📊 Provide flexible overviews: once evaluations are in, share the results in a manner that gives overview, but also allows for ranking on different criteria 🕰 Get people together to make the final decision: make sure everyone has a chance to get heard, and select ideas based on both consensus and strong individual convictions. Make sure to also discuss actions for deselected ideas 📣 Communicate the results: let people know what the decision is and what the immediate actions are 🏃♂️Get moving, fast: nothing is more detrimental to innovation than a decision that leads to nothing. Ok so governance - what do we mean by this? Broadly, it means having control of your processes. It means having a process, if you haven't already got one and it means making changes in an incremental, managed way. The key word here is 'managed' - i.e. changes must be approved in some way If your analysis project doesn’t have any of the following….. 1. A single point of truth - be it a model or a GA, which is carefully version controlled 2. A series of clearly defined datums from which all measurement must be based on 3. A robust checking and approval process …….then you'd better sort it out pretty quick, because without these 3 key ingredients, you're running the risk of absolute chaos! On bigger FE models, it's preferable to conduct your checks in stages - not only does it prevent the checker from being completely overwhelmed and therefore prone to missing something, it also potentially prevents issues downstream when you come to run the model! #oilandgas #structuralengineering #finiteelementanalysis #engineering
