Listening to Jim Coulter on the Dry Powder Podcast while at the gym today and here's what stood out. The key is next year's ideas, even if your record is built on last year's ideas. The firms that see long-term success are those that play 3-dimensional chess and operate well across all three boards. 1. The first board is investing well, which is table stakes. 2. The second board is firm building. How do you manage yourself, build culture, and make decisions? 3. The third is the strategic board. Can you successfully place yourself in front of big waves? A great example in the VC space would be Sequoia. What other shops come to mind? #venturecapital #privateequity #investing #TPG #DryPowder

💡 Decoding Priced Equity Rounds 💡 In priced equity rounds, investors typically aim for 20% to 33% ownership. So, if you’re raising $10M, expect your valuation to land between $30M and $50M. These figures aren't just about your company's value—they reflect investor ownership targets of the investor. Want more details? In a recent episode of the Lex Fridman podcast, Bill Ackman, founder and chief executive officer of Pershing Square Capital Management, L.P. shared many interesting takes about finance and investing. I've been fascinated by Bill for quite some time now, ever since I watched the Netflix documentary "Betting on Zero" about his short position against Herbalife. Despite the outcome not aligning with his expectations, his fundamental analysis presented many valid points. He continues to be regarded as a legendary investor, with influence and fame extending beyond Wall Street, and remains a billionaire. One key takeaway that resonated with me is the importance of understanding the difference between price and value when it comes to investing. As Ackman emphasizes, "Price is what you pay, value is what you get." He further elaborates on the idea that the stock market, much like a neighbor making offers for your house, can present both good and bad opportunities. By focusing on understanding the intrinsic value of a company, investors can make informed decisions that align with their long-term goals. As Ackman underscores the crucial distinction between speculation and investing, we echo his sentiment, using the power of technology, we aim to improve the way investing is done, making it more accessible and transparent for everyone involved. If you were forced to listen (and watch) to one of the podcasts below, which one would you choose: 1. Talks with web3 experts on the topics they are the industry thought leaders in? 2. A “Last week in web3” show with 2-3 hosts discussing what happened in the industry and how it influenced anyone (or everyone) in web3? 3. Startup roasting: a live pitch with follow-up questions and feedback (uncensored and raw) 👽

Go Independent Without Feeling Isolated When we help financial advisors explore their Independent options, a common theme is advisors also seeking "community" within their new firm. Having a group of contemporaries that they can run ideas by and feel like there’s more to it than just a rep number—being connected to something larger than themselves. This is where the OSJ model inside of an Independent Broker Dealer can potentially be a great fit. Going Independent is not as hard as you may think! I recently caught up with Greg Raines, CEO of TAG Advisors, one of the largest OSJs in the country and the largest inside of Cambridge (leading IBD) to discuss all of it. I hope you find our conversation helpful. YouTube and Podcast, 🔎 search: Firm Transitions or Corey Walen #FATransistion #financialadvisor #independent
