The work my fellow EiR Jane Dalton MBA FRSA and my personal shero, the esteemed and inimitable Radka Newton from Lancaster University have been doing on the I-connect project, which looks at transport in the Lancaster and Morecambe area is something that Lancaster City Council and Lancashire County Council need to pay close attention to! We are on the verge of losing 3 city centre car parks with no robust or viable transport alternatives. I don’t drive, and I have a hidden disability that means I have to rely on the poor public transport options currently available. Most of my car driving friends would not deign to be a “bus w*nker” with the current provision, for many of the reasons stated in Radka’s article. When I could walk easily, I found the path between Morecambe and Lancaster a very off putting space and often stuck to the main road. Not the most scenic walk! It is both great, and a shame, that Eden Morecambe has been such a driver for this close examination of how we navigate the space around us here. This is particularly timely as my customers who drive will be less inclined to come into town where it’s already a bunfight for a parking space at peak times. (I digress, but the consultation is open until 13 May - you can have your say here https://loom.ly/_aCwe88). Small businesses are such a huge part of what makes Lancaster and Morecambe special - making sure they can be accessed is something the local councils should be working together on. (Note - from the last consultation meeting for business owners, it transpired that City and County are NOT working together on the proposed parking changes at this time). Sorry Radka I kinda hijacked this to kvetch about current parking stitch. It is a really balanced article. Keep up the awesome work! Kamal E. I (re)launch brands and scale them to millions: Consultant/ Entrepreneur/ Contractor; for launches, turnarounds & tuneups.
My old neighbourhood. I can understand these people's position. But does the mathematics of carbon capture support it? Can anyone correct me here? A quick search shows that a eucalypt is a very fast growing efficient absorber of C02, but that slows when the tree reaches maturity. It is estimated that they can sequester 2kg per m2 of soil in 17 years (Hui Zange et al, "...dynamics of carbon accumulation in eucalyptus...") and that the above ground section absorbs 860'000 kg per hectare (10'000m2) or 86kg per m2, above ground (govt Queennsland, Eucalypt forest management guide rev28/6/23). So, when cars emit ~150g/km, one eucalyptus tree M2 ground area allows for 700km of driving. It is a quickly drawn conclusion that when a network of bike paths is built, it can quickly be a carbon impact positive, because less people will need to drive those kilometers. For context, the average Dutch person rides a bike 979km a year. For equal context, Paris in France - a car adoring culture that is in no single way less enamored with them than Australia, that had equal absence of cycling as a serious vehicular choice in the late 90's; has grown cycling modal share every single year from 2004 to 2020, growing 60%. In that same period car use declined 16%, while average driving speeds increased 9%. No, not more speeding; less congestion, so drivers lives are more pleasant thanks to cycling.
*** SCATL update *** The Caringbah community has made an impassioned plea to the NSW Government to go back to the drawing board and deliver most of the Sutherland to Cronulla Active Transport Link (SCATL) in the rail corridor. And save 73 trees along the western half of Denman Avenue. https://lnkd.in/gDtvdXcz We are very disappointed that the rail corridor alignment, greatly preferred by residents, Sutherland Council and Bicycle NSW, has not been progressed for Stage 2 East of SCATL. Read more about our advocacy here: https://lnkd.in/gjXV5e4E However, Bicycle NSW recognises that Transport for NSW has tried to to minimise tree loss, as set out in a recent community update. The community campaign has not been in vain. The Denman Avenue plans show how the shared path accommodates several of the larger trees https://lnkd.in/gSKJsbRu Stage 3 design work is now underway with a new design team. Bicycle NSW has been promised that the use of the rail corridor is being seriously investigated. This section of Denman Ave east of Gannons Road has a particularly thick and mature tree canopy that needs to be preserved. The climate is heating up frighteningly fast and trees provide critical shade, habitat and carbon sequestration. We eagerly await more Stage 3 design workshops and will keep our friends and Members updated on the plans. Municipal Affairs at COA - Partnering with municipalities and transit authorities to provide cost-free infrastructure.
"Some people may call these amenities, but if you have a less frequent bus route, like mine with a 60-minute headway, you certainly may need to sit while you wait. A bench — or preferably a shelter — for waiting, if room is available. Something to help provide some shade or block the rain. Fundamentals. As an elder now, little things like lighting and a trash bin make a big difference in your perception of the total transit experience." If you are a municipality that would like to provide seating and recycling bins without incurring more expenses, please reach out. Cost and maintenance free options are available. We have partnerships with over 400 municipalities and transit authorities. #MetropolitanMayorsCaucus #AQOLFA #funding #usmayors #citymanager #cityplanning #municipal #municipalities #publicspaces #publicspace #transitadvertising #busriders #publictransportation #publictransit #transitauthority #transit #bus #commuting #transit #cityscapes #cityliving #townplanning #townplanner #transportationsolutions #city #townhall #towns #citycouncil #transportation #transportationplanning #transportationindustry #towncouncil #transportationsystem #benches #bench #busshelter #publicprivatepartnerships #publicprivatepartnership #publicworks #publictransportation #mayor #mayors #publicworks #bus #citymanagement #plasticrecycling #municipality #townplanning #townplanner #publicworks #governmentagencies #ourplanet #sustainabilitygoals #sustainablefuture #usmayors, #recyclingsolutions #recyclingmatters #greenearth #landfill #landfillgas #landfills #polution #recycleresponsibly #recycling #recycled #cityplanning #wasterecycling #waste #savetheplanet #plasticpollution #plasticrecycling #governmentagencies #ourplanet #partnerships #publicprivatepartnerships #oceanplastic #ocean #sustainablecities #sustainability #sustainable #sustainabilitymatters #sustainableliving #greenearth #equity #urbanmobility https://lnkd.in/gsPrvfNX

🚶♂️🚶♀️ I'm excited to share that over the past two weeks, I've been taking this amazing training course focused on the design and implementation of pedestrian raised crossings. These innovative and cost-effective solutions are essential for enhancing pedestrian safety and promoting walkable communities. Key takeaways from the course include: Who is going to use it? Understanding the definition of inclusivity as well as diverse range of pedestrians, including children, elderly individuals, and those with disabilities, who benefit from these crossings. Where it should be placed? Identifying optimal locations for raised crossings and using community engagement as a powerful tool for that. Why we use raised crossings? Having a strategic view on the importance of raised crossings and their effectiveness in reducing vehicle speeds and improving safety. How to design a raised crossing? Learning the essential design elements, including appropriate heights, sight distances, slopes, materials, and signage, to ensure functionality and accessibility. I'm looking forward to applying these insights to future projects and contributing to creating safer, more pedestrian-friendly environments.
