Another step towards turning healthcare sustainable

With over 50% of providers lacking a strategy for environmental sustainability, and staffing challenges on the rise, it's clear that innovative solutions are essential. Surveys reveal that younger generations prioritise a company's commitment to sustainability, with up to 40% willing to leave if not satisfied. So, if care homes are not delivering on sustainability it could contribute to how employees feel about their workplace. At the upcoming Care Show in London, discussions on Sustainability and ESG will take centre stage, highlighting innovative strategies for care homes. From reducing energy consumption to promoting diversity and opportunity, speakers will delve into practical solutions and best practices. We enjoyed working alongside Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust’s (SCFT) to create the Care Without Carbon (CWC) Net Zero Carbon engagement campaign. As the SCFT aims to achieve ambitious carbon reduction targets to reach Net Zero Carbon Healthcare, our team created a behaviour change strategy that supports the Trust, its practitioners, and patients to become more environmentally, and socially sustainable. Our concept was created around the simple fact that ‘reduced emissions’ means ‘reduced admissions’; a short and to-the-point statement that captures the relationship between the environment and patient health, shifting focus to a more preventative perspective where a healthy environment means healthier communities. This was achieved by splitting the project into two campaigns: 🌳 The ‘Together to Zero’ communications campaign for the broader Integrated Care System (ICS) that informs and empowers staff to make climate-positive changes in their practice, 🔄 The ‘Care, Challenge, Share’ engagement programme for SCFT that embeds a sustainability narrative throughout the trust and its operations. With an overall goal of carbon reduction, our integrated approach means that each campaign supports the other, as well as the core CWC brand. We delivered a range of physical and digital outcomes so staff of all levels could realise the potential impact in their work. Supported with real-life examples of colleagues challenging and changing their everyday practice, we created a feeling of collective action in our messaging. Yesterday, the HEAPY Symposium on Sustainability in Health Care provided an opportunity to hear from industry leaders. I was particularly struck by the lunch keynote session, where Moderator Daric Hess guided a panel featuring Kara Hammond Brooks of American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE), Theodore Sergakis II, MBOE of OHA, and Aparna Dial of The Ohio State University.    Most often, real change begins when leadership commits to sustainable practices. The panelist's insights shed light on the path toward "Living out the Mission, Reducing Healthcare's Carbon Footprint for a Healthier Community." Reflecting on current trends, the panel clarified that sustainability is not just a buzzword but a pressing need. The healthcare industry faces multifaceted challenges from the impact of uncertain world economies to the evolving landscape of technology and the growing focus on mental health. Embracing sustainability isn't just a choice—it's a necessity in navigating these complexities.   Key takeaway: the advice to "find your gap, and just get started" resonates deeply.
