I spoke with Gothamist last week about the pros & cons of Restaurant Week (which is now 3-4 weeks, 2x per year). As a former restaurateur, I have stated many times in the past, my general dislike for the program (for many reasons). That said, it usually beats not doing it (for the venue), as at least you get some cash flow, and there is some clear value to the diners that can get a reservation at a spot that's typically outside their budget, (or would prefer not to pay full price for). Regarding the premise that it is most beneficial as a marketing tool, to either upsell or gain new diners, my experience is, both of those eventualities are quite rare. While there are greater issues in our society at present, unemployment, dereliction, fall in tax revenues and a reduction of our tourism industry’s key attraction (our hospitality), the government needs to address the issues facing the hospitality industry. Too long seen under the same lense as the hotel industry, bars/restaurants/cafes are struggling. Seeing this first hand in one of my small businesses, we are on course to deliver our best year in 5 years from a turnover perspective. Our best year in 5 years from a gross margin perspective, but perhaps our least rewarding year due to increased overheads, labour cost and labour shortages. Whilst we are in a position to weather this and are on a solid course to improve on both turnover, margin and overheads in 2024, many are not as fortunate and their businesses are under extreme pressure as a result of geo-political issues and a lack of political understanding of the pressure of running a small business. Minister Michael McGrath and colleagues need to listen to the calls from Adrian Cummins Licensed Vintners Association to support an industry that forms a huge part of the fabric of our communities.
