Resharing information about our Let's Talk Disability (note not 'about' Disability but to people who are Disabled). The aim of these is to open up discussion about the lived experience of disability, and create action that leads to change. On each episode I host a senior leader at the university who talks to a member of staff or postgraduate researcher who has lived experience of Disability. At the end of the episode I ask them each to ask the other a question. This creates a list of one-things that I will go back and follow up - to see how we are creating a more disability-inclusive environment. I know we have a lot to do but there is a tremendous willingness for these conversations and I am already witnessing change happen. Registered Blind AuDHD Rhino, (Rhinos are just chubby unicorns with bad eyesight) 🦏 Disability Consultant, Speaker & Trainer. Accelerating Inclusive Accessible Change
Just because two people are Disabled doesn't mean they will agree. It doesn't mean they will use the same language to self-identify. It doesn't mean they will use the same adjustments/ accommodations. It doesn't mean what’s accessible for one will be for the other. And just because your sister’s, nephew’s, cousin is Autistic doesn’t mean that every other Autistic person you meet is the same. (Sorry, I get this one a lot; I had to add it.) Disability is diverse. There is no one experience. No one appearance. No one way to self-identify, and there’s no one way to be Disabled. If you’re going to learn anything about Disability, understand its diversity and that there is no right or wrong way to be Disabled. #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabledBySociety #MondayMotivation #DiversityAndInclusion

Have you watched or listened to the resent episode of Factually! where Adam Conover talks to Ashley Shew? The episode is called "# What Tech Gets Wrong About Disability with Ashley Shew" and Ashley and Adam get it right. Too much talk and design about disability don't involve disabled people as integral parts of the process. Too often, the goal is to "fix" disability, but we aren't broken, that type of thinking is. This talk and her book, Against Technoableism: Rethinking Who Needs Improvement, is important for anyone that is involved in design, service, or policy change. What are some tangible ways we can enhance support systems within disability households to ensure every individual's needs are met and genuinely understood and valued? 💙 The concept of "support" within disabled households can be redefined by acknowledging that it goes beyond mere assistance with daily tasks. True support involves creating an environment where individuals are encouraged to pursue their aspirations, dreams, and goals. It means providing the necessary resources, encouragement, and understanding to empower individuals to reach their full potential despite challenges. This type of support not only enhances the quality of life for those with disabilities but also contributes to a more inclusive and compassionate society overall! 💪 Here at AFNC, our mission is to provide quality care to all our clients! We offer services to help support those with disabilities as well as provide assistance to better help them and their families!
