Our Sustainable Seafood Week in Australia is coming to an end. This week, we saw some great posts from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), who are driving the strategy. Where our products come from and how they're made, grown, or fished matters. When we make a purchase, we're connecting to not just a location but also a promise, one of which is sustainability. Here's a shout-out to our clients who have invested in technology to ensure our seafood products are not only as described on pack, but also come from certified sustainable sources (e.g. MSC). During the next few weeks, the Source Certain team will be out and about obtaining these products from supply chains across Australia for provenance testing as part of our ongoing surveillance program. "Environmental Impact of Trawling on Air Quality" Fish is a staple in diets worldwide, contributing to a seafood market valued at over $257 billion. While aquaculture supplies a significant portion of this demand, about 25% of wild fish are harvested through trawling, a method involving dragging nets across the ocean floor to capture large quantities of fish simultaneously. However, this common fishing technique is now linked to significant air pollution issues. Recent research highlights that trawling not only disrupts marine ecosystems but also releases substantial amounts of carbon into the atmosphere—more than the entire global aviation industry. This carbon dioxide contributes to the greenhouse effect, warming the planet, intensifying weather patterns, and raising sea levels. Currently, regulatory frameworks focusing on carbon emissions primarily address terrestrial sources and overlook those originating from oceanic activities. With an ambitious goal to safeguard 30% of our oceans by 2030, there is a pressing need for the fishing industry to adopt more sustainable practices. This year, Austria's Fish Dependence Day was on January 25th, which makes the country the most reliant on imported seafood. 🎣 But it's not just Austria – Europe as a whole heavily depends on imports for over half of its yearly seafood demand, with about 50 percent coming from developing countries. Overfishing is a critical global issue, impacting more than 30 percent of fish stock with almost 60 percent fished to capacity.
