Excited to share this super interesting body of research comparing the environmental impact of frozen food products to their alternatives (fresh, chilled, canned, jarred etc.). This was one of my first projects when starting at PRé, and still one of my favorites. While theres a lot going on in this visual, I think it represents well how different preservation methods and where the main hotspots lie. Some fun food for thought inspired by our findings: 🥦 additional energy required for a frozen supply chain is typically overcompensated by lower food losses 🍓 consumer food waste is a massive driver of overall impact for fresh/chilled products - a good reminder to keep on top of your fridge management 🍊 as reflected in most LCAs, transportation is not a major hotspot, showing its typically more important what you're eating rather than where it's coming from (apart from those being flown, which is a different story) 🥒chilled retail energy consumption is often much higher than frozen as they use fewer closed doors Big ups to the dream team Ellen Meijer Laura Schumacher and of course a shout out to Oliver Spring for his everlasting energy and fish facts.
🥗 Are there significant differences in the carbon footprint between frozen and non-frozen food products? Consuming fresh food would be the best if you have the time to cook or when you have a personal chef at home 😎 However, in today's busy society, many would opt for frozen meals or other alternatives which are more accessible and less time consuming to prepare. From the #sustainability point of view, have you ever wondered which easy meals would have the least impact to the #environment? Well worth catching up on this from Kitty Wheeler in Food Digital - as the pioneers at Nomad Foods on their work to cut the use of energy in freezers. The idea is to 'move to -15C' and an 18 month study is showing no noticeable impact on the nutritional value, safety, texture and taste of products. They're a huge player in the food industry - with brands like Birds Eye, Findus, iglo, Ledo, and Frikom and have collaborated with Campden BRI to investigate the viability of increasing frozen food storage temperatures. ❄ Chief Executive Officer of Nomad Foods, Stefan Descheemaeker "The latest results of our study with Campden BRI underlines the critical role frozen food has in reducing the impact of the wider food industry on climate change.” #Sustainability #Energy #SupplyChain https://lnkd.in/eh8zvhV3

Nomad Foods, holding a portfolio of #frozenfoods including Birds Eye, Findus, iglo, Ledo and Frikom, has released the twelve-month results of its study, which the company claims may change the temperature at which it store frozen products, leading to “significant” #carbonemissions reduction and cost savings. The twelve month results, completed with food science and technology organization Campden BRI, build on a successful six month pilot that Nomad Foods announced last summer. It further validates the notion that storing frozen food at -15°C, instead of the #industrystandards -18°C (zero degrees Fahrenheit), can reduce freezer #energy consumption by 10–11% without any noticeable impact on product safety, texture, taste or #nutritional value. The findings come as the #frozenfoodindustry celebrates 100 years since flash-freezing was first invented by Clarence Birdseye in 1924. The study supports a European analysis released last December, which suggested increasing frozen food temperature by 3°C could improve #food chain #sustainability. #foodbusiness #foodtechnology #energysavingsolutions #distribution #supermarkets #productquality #industrystandards #coldchain #markets #markettrends
