From the forest to tires and from Nokia to Nürnberg! 🌲 🏙 Our R&D experts Anne Ojala and Teemu Soini visited the German rubber industry conference DKT 2024 in Nürnberg, Germany this week. At the fair, they introduced our newest concept tire, the Nokian Tyres Green Step Lignin. The Green Step Lignin is the first tire ever made with UPM BioMotion™ Renewable Functional Filler, in which the natural raw material lignin is turned into a refined, high quality, renewable chemical product. The secret of the wood-based renewable filler material is in its particles, which are specifically designed to provide strength and grip alongside a significantly improved sustainability performance. In the Nokian Tyres Green Step Lignin all fossil carbon black in the tire’s sidewalls is replaced by the new renewable raw material, that has the potential to replace even more of the carbon black currently used in tire production thus lowering carbon emissions in tire manufacturing.
