Title: The Film Industry in Crisis: A Call for Honest Dialogue and Change The North American Film and TV/Stream Industry is currently facing a standstill due to an ongoing strike. As actors and writers unite, active productions have dropped by more than 80%. The survival of actors is under threat as Studios and Streamers attempt to scan and exploit them without providing proper royalties and residuals. However, in this complex situation, all parties involved seem to be overlooking some crucial facts. It is time to shed light on the real situation and initiate an open and honest discussion. First and foremost, it must be acknowledged that a significant number of people only consider themselves part of the film industry. Out of the 160,000 members of the SAG and 11,500 WGA members, only about 20% make enough money to sustain themselves. The remaining 80% rely on income from other jobs or support from their families. Additionally, there are around 100,000 aspiring actors and 50,000 aspiring writers who are not even part of the SAG or WGA. The notion of being an actor or writer in Hollywood has been romanticized, leading to a large number of people pursuing these paths without a realistic understanding of the challenges involved. In contrast, crew members such as ACs and Grips are generally more grounded in their professions, with a stable source of income. Interestingly, most Studios and Streamers are not profiting; they are actually losing money. Believing that market share will solve their financial woes, they overlook the harsh reality that profitability lies beyond a mere increase in market share. The advent of AI and photorealistic avatars in productions presents an alarming prospect for the future of the film industry. If Producers can obtain perfect scripts written by AI and utilize lifelike avatars instead of real actors, the appeal of cost-efficient computer-generated actors becomes undeniable. Eliminating the need for actors and writers means no crew, equipment, locations, or other production expenses. While films like AVENGERS, TRANSFORMERS, and INDIANA JONES already employ real actors primarily in dialogue scenes, the trend of digitally superimposing actors' faces on stunt performers or CGI clones during action sequences is growing. While some A-list actors might be willing to accept lower pay in exchange for a reduced workload, this approach could be detrimental to side actors who may be relegated to mere avatars with no potential for additional income. The consequences of such developments are deeply troubling for all industry workers, potentially signaling the end of traditional income streams and the familiar landscape of film production.

Realism in film can be very multifaceted. Could the pictures be realistic? The sounds? How about both? What is realism in film anyway? Realism in film can be as obsolete as a floppy disk. It's a thing in the past. Nowadays, we got higher definition cameras to picture every single detail of every frame. Everything is realistic, even your embarassing picture from high school. Top european auteurs beg to differ. They are sick with the idea of a film being "too fancy" with additional special effects and high-def cameras. According to these filmmakers, film should be presented raw, omitting any visual and special effects. Obeying this premise should limit the creative liberty of filmmakers, forcing them to innovate in new ways more than one, just so the film can still be enjoyable. During my studies in Linneaus University, I've learned about a Scandinavian film movement "Dogme 95 Manifesto". The founders of this movement believed that the film industry must be "purified". The movement aims to make a film "as realistic" as possible, i.e., free from any forms of special effects, make-up, and lazy writing. Limiting the creativity of filmmakers, the output of the film would show the film as it is, as natural as possible, aiming for "true realism", which is, free from any visual effects. Dreamworks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 pulled in an estimated $30 million over its second weekend to top the domestic box office for the second consecutive week, narrowly outpacing Dune 2. Distributed by Universal, the latest Kung Fu Panda sequel has now grossed $107.7 million from its first two weeks in cinemas and should continue to thrive with no significant kids and family competition on the horizon. The next big studio pictures targeting young audiences will be Paramount Pictures’ IF on May 17 and Alcon Entertainment’s The Garfield Movie on May 24. Disney will put Luca in cinemas on March 22, but the lackluster theatrical releases of Soul and Turning Red in January and February instill very little confidence that people will show up for Luca. Kung Fu Panda 4, directed by Mike Mitchell and co-directed by Stephanie Ma Stine, is now the first animated film to top the domestic box office in back-to-back weeks since The Super Mario Bros. Movie did so in April of last year. That film was also released by Universal, which has become the dominant animation distributor at U.S. theaters over the last several years. Explore the Anatomy of a Time Travel Thriller With This SXSW Filmmaker https://ift.tt/NmUqTHt Making its world premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival, Michael Felker’s heady, sci-fi thriller Things Will Be Different is a perfect continuation of a budding indie film time travel genre that has found a home over the years at fests like SXSW and Sundance. Telling the story of two estranged siblings who hide out in an abandoned farmhouse that transports them to a different time, the story is full of interesting twists and turns that keep you asking continuously more questions. We sat down with Felker to talk about how he was able to conceive and plan his film, as well as offer any tips he might have for other aspiring indie filmmakers looking to concoct their intricate time travel features. No Film School: So tell us how Things Will Be Different came about. What drew you to write and direct a sci-fi time-traveling tale like this? Michael Felker: I think for me it just comes from the fact that I grew up watching a lot of sci-fi with my dad. His background is in engineering, so he's processes movies with a logical mindset. He ingrained that same type of thinking into me when I was younger and watching movies with him. I especially loved watching sci-fi films and time travel movies [with him]. Half the time I watch a sci-fi movie, I either call him to talk about it. Or, if we watch it together, we go to coffee afterward and just talk about the different theories, mysteries and see if we could piece together the movie’s puzzles. That's just like half the fun for us. So when conceiving this movie, Things Will Be Different, which does have a lot of time travel elements, that post-movie coffee talk was important to me. I always wanted to shoot a movie at this abandoned farm we have in Michigan. It just sits there unused and one day, I was finally just like, “ want to make a cool feature there.” So my dad and I just started spitballing ideas about what to shoot, and we came up with this movie that's just about brother and sister bank robbers who hide out in a safe house that hides them away in a different time. One of the mantras I have now when writing movies is that one of the best weapons you can have as an indie filmmaker is to make something that you've never seen before. And I'd never seen a movie where people go hide in a safe house that takes them to a different time before. My dad never saw that before either. That could lead to so many different possibilities. So, starting from there, the rest of the movie continued to move forward starting with that unique nugget. No Film School: In a practical sense, how does one come up with the different timelines needed for a time-travel thriller movie? How did you plan things out for the story of the film?
