Beyond Barefoot: The design difference between a barefoot shoe and a custom LoreOne. It’s well established that barefoot style shoes allow for a number of foot health and athletic performance benefits over traditional shoe lasts. Barefoot shoes are generally wider and offer more anatomically shaped toe box designs that impinge less on the natural design and function of the foot. A less constrained design equates to better central nervous system response, as well as better balance and stronger muscular change engagement. The problem is that in many barefoot designed shoes, the foot can often swim in a shoe that is too wide for the user which in turn forces a negative nervous system reaction: the body is faced with the problem of trying to find grip both within the shoe AND with the ground itself. This facilitates over-engagement of stabilizer muscles-- an inefficient use of energy and inefficient force transfer. Enter the custom nature of the Morphic algorithm and its importance to the evolution of footwear design and performance. The LoreOne’s footbed perfectly cups the perimeter of the user’s foot because it’s built 100% custom. The cupping is gentle, but it’s just enough to engage the lower third of the fat pads around the entire of the foot. The result is the perfect blend of relaxed, natural comfort combined with instantaneous lateral force transfer when the foot moves and tries to drive force into the ground. 300-500 miles? Not only a myth, but wrong. Happy to contribute to The Wall Street Journal article about running shoe longevity. As a runner and running shoe designer, "how long do shoes last?" is one of the most frequent questions I hear. While it's been quoted forever, I've never seen research, a test method, or an industry standard that 300-500 miles life is based on. Even if it was true at one point 30 years ago shoes today are much different than those even 5 years old. New foams, new materials. There a huge range of materials, construction methods and design factors that affect longevity. The variance of runner size, weight and type and gait makes it even more complicated. Add on environmental factors, types of runs and surface conditions and I don't think any type of "across the board" lifespan rule is useful. The "twist test" in this article? Sorry, even more useless. "Does it twist" can have much more to do with materials and design (it's not twisting ever if it has a plate) than if it's worn out. I can't ever actually imagine materials breaking down so much that the physical property allows something to twist that previously didn't. Many shoes (minimal, etc.) are in fact designed to twist out of the box. PS. I've never tried the VEJA Condor 3 so can't comment on this specific shoe or claims. As a runner and running shoe designer I talk a lot about specifications. And specificity is important. But the secret ingredient, is experience. How a shoe feels and what is the runner experience is like. Knowing a shoe’s stack height, drop, weight in grams, midsole durometer, and last geometry is critical, but there’s more to making a great running shoe. Experience is important because it’s not something you can quantify. You can’t test it in a lab. You often can’t even describe it. It can vary from runner to runner or even run to run. Even working as a footwear designer for 20 years, it’s something I often struggle to communicate in brand briefs, to factories and development partners. But experience is key. Runner Experience is unique because it’s not just one thing. It’s multidimensional. It can be fit and cushioning, ride and breathability, aesthetics and energy return and more. Runners may buy a pair of shoes based on specs. But they buy the second pair (or not) because of that experience. As a runner and running shoe designer, I know both sides. I know the specs. I know the experience. It’s the combination that makes a great running shoe. Running shoe design by runners. For runners.
