Unfortunately, the world’s oceans are being degraded and losing resilience. Energy development, pollution, human-caused noise, industrial fisheries, invasive species, climate change, and increased boat traffic are all making habitat less hospitable for marine life. Marine heatwaves affect the surface of the ocean and the seafloor, a new study shows. The researchers found that extreme heat can penetrate deep into the ocean, disrupting the ecosystems and biodiversity of the continental shelf. Calling on Iridium Satellite UK Ltd to stop profiting from overfishing   Increasingly, tech companies are being scrutinised and held accountable for what their technology and platforms are used for. One such company which is currently under the spotlight is Iridium Satellite UK Iridium due to the widespread use of two of the company’s Short Burst Data modules in the drifting fish aggregating devices (d-FADs) deployed by the industrial tuna fishing fleets in the Indian Ocean, Fishing with d-FADs had led to massive overfishing of targeted tuna populations in the region with knock-on effects for the small-scale fishers from the coastal states. 80 marine and environmental organisations, plus a number of concerned scientists and prominent figures such as Chris Packham, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Amanda Holden have signed a joint letter to decision makers at Iridium calling on the satellite company to stop providing GPS data to fisheries that puts vulnerable ocean species at risk of extinction. #tech #indianOcean #fisheries #tuna   https://bit.ly/42olcVp
