The future of semiconductor innovation 🌎 Next week we kick off the economic mission on semiconductors and integrated photonics to Connecticut, New York and Ontario. The visit of 30 companies and organizations takes place parallel to the visit of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima. The Netherlands is home to many leading players in global semiconductor and integrated photonics ecosystems. "In a range of 125 miles, the Netherlands hosts more than 300 companies that are active in the broad semiconductor industry", says Marc Hendrikse, chairman Holland High Tech and delegation leader. "From chip design to the production of computer chips, from front-end production equipment to metrology, testing and advanced packaging, from research and development to component production, the Netherlands is among the few countries to have the complete semiconductor value chain at such a short distance." The innovative delegation includes companies and research institutions such as ASML, ASM, NXP, PhotonDelta TNO and Imec, and will join this mission and visit major US firms and important research centers, including IBM, Global Foundries, NY Creates and the University of Toronto. The UK semiconductor sector has gained improved access to a €1.3 billion research fund from Horizon Europe, following the UK's participation in the EU’s ‘Chips Joint Undertaking’. This move is supported by an initial £5 million grant this year and an additional £30 million for further research between 2025 and 2027. This enhanced access enables British researchers and businesses to bid for funding from the Horizon Europe pot, strengthening the country's position in the global chip supply chain. The UK's collaboration with Horizon Europe offers unprecedented opportunities for UK companies and research institutions to lead global initiatives, with the potential to engage in joint research with the Republic of Korea. This initiative has been met with enthusiasm from leaders in the UK semiconductor industry, reflecting the positive impact on the UK’s competitiveness, innovation, and relevance in critical technologies for the future. Thrilled to have had the opportunity to visit the corporate headquarters of IMEC in Leuven (Belgium) last week on behalf of SEMI Europe, together with our friends from ASML and ESIA - European Semiconductor Industry Association. The visit has provided a unique opportunity to learn in greater depth the #qualities and key #successfactors that have turned a former research laboratory into a recognized global leader for advanced research on #semiconductors. In the current context of #geopolitical tensions and uncertainty, it is fundamental for our association to strengthen #collaboration with its industrial #champions in pursuit of greater #strategicautonomy for the #europeanunion.

The Government of Catalonia has presented the Strategy for the Promotion of the #Semiconductor Industry in Catalonia with the aim of consolidating Catalonia as one of the reference poles of the semiconductor industry in Europe. The event was chaired by the Minister of Business and Employment, Roger Torrent i Ramió; the Minister of Economy and Finance, Natàlia Mas Guix, and the Minister of Research and Universities, Joaquim Nadal i Farreras. This initiative is promoted by the Semiconductor and #Chip Alliance of Catalonia, which is formed by several departments of the Generalitat, companies and research and innovation agents. The document is an action plan that should enable value-added industrial policies and support initiatives that, within the framework of the Alliance, have a decisive impact on improving the competitiveness of the semiconductor industry in Catalonia. Both the Semiconductor Alliance and the Board of the Semiconductor and Chip Alliance of Catalonia include Luis Fonseca Chácharo, in his capacity as director of IMB-CNM, CSIC. As a member of the Board, Fonseca represented IMB-CNM at the event. The presentation was followed by an exchange of ideas "where the IMB-CNM proposal to dedicate efforts to transfer the benefits of semiconductor technologies and applications to society in a didactic way was taken up. The UK has joined the EU’s ‘Chips Joint Undertaking’ giving the semiconductor sector enhanced access to a €1.3bn Horizon Europe fund for research up to 2027. 🗨 CEO at Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult, Martin McHugh, said: "This is an excellent opportunity for UK researchers and businesses to strengthen links with our EU partners and collaborate on cutting-edge semiconductor projects of national importance. Bosch continues to drive the European production of microelectronic technologies. 🌍 This week, Robert Habeck, German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, confirmed the funding intention for IPCEI microelectronics and communication technologies to Tanja Rueckert, member of the Bosch board of management and chief digital officer, in Berlin. With the IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) funding, EU member states contribute to advancing the regional microelectronics industry. IPCEI supports trustworthy value chains and aims to strengthen Europe’s role in semiconductor manufacturing. Bosch intends to use the funding for three distinct innovation fields across several divisions – from chips to whole systems. These include technology platforms for performance electronics and sensors, development of new semiconductor technologies, a module platform for AR glasses, as well as system platforms for highly automated driving. These initiatives will help expand Germany’s innovation landscape and take further steps towards a more resilient chip supply chain in Europe.
