June is Pride Month! 🏳🌈 All month long people from across the country and around the world will be celebrating the activism, achievements, and culture of people of the 2SLGBTQIA (two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, Intersex and asexual) communities. In recent years Canada has made strides in recognizing and supporting these communities. Here are some highlights: 🔸2017 - On behalf of Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered a formal, historic apology for discrimination against LGBTQ2 people in our country. 🔹2017 - The LGBTQ2 Secretariat is created. Its function is to inform the Canadian government about issues important to these communities. 🔸2019 - The first federal program is created and dedicated to LGBTQ2 communities and organizations, advancing rights and equality. 🔹2022 - Conversion therapy is criminalized in Canada 🔸2022 - The Government of Canada introduces the first Federal 2SLGBTQI Action Plan- Building Our Future, with Pride. The plan is designed to advance the rights and equality of 2SLGBTQI people in Canada. Did you know? Leonard Matlovich (1943-1988) was a Vietnam War veteran and the first openly gay service member to purposely out himself to the military to challenge their ban on gays. His courage and determination to stand up for equality marked a significant moment in the fight for LGBTQ rights within the military. Matlovich's legacy is a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on advancing civil liberties. When everyone is included, everyone wins. Pride Month, celebrated every June, honours the LGBTQ community's vibrant diversity and achievements. It's a time to unite and commemorate progress towards equality and acceptance for all sexual orientations and gender identities. We spotlight pioneers whose courage, achievements and authenticity have profoundly impacted their communities and the world. “We will always stand at the forefront for the freedom and security of queer people in the Union” 🏳️🌈 Today, we welcome the adoption of the EU LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020-2025 by the Committee on Civil Liberties. Although Europe has been busy implementing its LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020-2025, we have seen that progress on LGBTIQ rights cannot be taken for granted. The rise of far right political forces has motivated an increase of the harassment and persecution of LGBTIQ persons. “Queer rights are an essential part of liberal democracy in Europe. All attacks on queer people are essentially attacks on our liberal democracy” states our Member Moritz Körner. We are working on robust legal frameworks, awareness campaigns and support networks to guarantee the safety of every person in Europe, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Together, we will foster a Europe where everyone feels secure, valued and free to be their authentic selves!

"Queer people have never been the focus of history, since their stories have often been omitted, denied or silenced. LGBTQ History Month aims to rectify this gap, and to build a more respectful and inclusive society for all people. I work as an LGBTQ workshop facilitator, and so I often spend time with queer asylum seekers. I know that the UK’s asylum system is incredibly hostile towards Muslim asylum seekers. Workshop facilitators will often suggest taking a photo together at the end of our activities, and of course many queer asylum seekers are uncomfortable with this, because they want to protect their anonymity and their identity, and do not want their families back home to know about their sexuality. However, I know that the workshop facilitators mean well, because many of them have been through the asylum system themselves, and know that photographic evidence is incredibly important in “proving” one’s sexual orientation. We have to talk about how onerous the burden of proof is for queer asylum seekers who have to navigate the hostile immigration system in this country". Just before the Canadian Snowbird season is about to begin, Canada warns LGBTQ travelers to be cautious of U.S. laws. Canada, citing the risk of potential dangers, is advising LGBTQ travelers planning trips to the United States to check how they might be affected by recently passed laws in some states. Anti-LGBTQ demonstrations in the U.S. last year rocketed 30-fold compared with 2017 and legal moves to restrict LGBTQ rights are on the rise. The move comes after at least 18 U.S. states passed laws that limit or ban certain things relevant to the LGBTQ community. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security also warned in May that threats of violence against the LGBTQ community were becoming more frequent and intense. Mid-morning Tuesday, August 29th Global Affairs Canada changed its U.S. travel advice to include a caveat for LGBTQ travellers because "some states have enacted laws and policies" that may affect them.
