Do you know the No. 1 reason people leave their jobs? *cue Jeopardy theme song music while you think* A bad boss. Yes, research shows that the top reason people quit their jobs is because of a bad manager. But why are there so many poor managers out there? 🚫 The majority of managers receive no managerial training at all. 🚫 With no formal training in place, new managers turn to mimicking previous bosses. 🚫 Today’s managers are being trained while on the job, rather than before the start as a manager. Today is the last day to apply for the Community Leadership Accelerator! During the course of the cohorts, in mid and final reviews, we've asked participants to share information about their growth and what they've taken away from the program. Here are a few of my favorites from our most recent cohort. And, if you're interested in applying, the link is in the comments below: —Being part of the Community Leadership Accelerator has been a transformative experience. The opportunity to connect with dedicated leaders, from other nonprofit organizations committed to various aspects of social justice, has been invaluable. —CLA has completely changed how I operate as a leader in my work in that I listen more than talk. In my life, it has encouraged me to be more active in my community. —CLA gives people an opportunity to learn about the self in both work and personal contexts and how that impacts your leadership. This program has helped me to understand what I can change and recognize the things that I cannot. Now I focus more on the things that I can change. —CLA helped show me how I want to conduct myself in life and at work. By having an optimistic take on reality and trying my best to approach situations and issues with kindness and openness. —CLA has been a consistent, positive force encouraging me to reflect on my leadership practice. It has opened my mind to many new strategies for working with others (and understanding my own needs/strengths/behaviors), making me a more patient, open-minded colleague.

Tuesday, June 18, 2024 From: Dr. Richard Francis Viktor Hogan Re: Managing Diverse Teams - Nonprofit leader 🆘 Remember, diversity isn’t just about hitting a quota; it’s about valuing different perspectives and leveraging them to drive positive change. 👍 Managing diverse teams in a nonprofit setting is crucial for achieving organizational success. ✔️ Here are three steps you can take to foster stronger, more diverse nonprofit leadership: — Develop a Mentor Program: • Implement mentorship programs to support a healthy talent pipeline and increase engagement and retention. These programs can also help create a more diverse management team by providing guidance and opportunities for underrepresented individuals. — Recruit Beyond Borders: • Look beyond your immediate network and geographical boundaries. Consider recruiting talent from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. Expanding your search can lead to fresh perspectives and innovative solutions. — Court Outside Perspectives: • Encourage collaboration with external partners, experts, and community leaders. • Seek input from diverse voices to inform decision-making and enhance your nonprofit’s impact. -30-

Today on our Wednesday knowledge snippet, learn more on Nonprofit leadership: Nonprofit leadership plays a crucial role in guiding organizations toward their mission-driven goals. Here are some key points about nonprofit leadership: Board of Directors: The primary leadership body in a nonprofit is the Board of Directors. They are responsible for strategic planning, financial oversight, fundraising, and hiring other leadership roles. Executive Director (ED): The ED is the top executive in a nonprofit. They lead day-to-day operations, manage staff, and ensure the organization’s mission is fulfilled. EDs often work closely with the board and other stakeholders. Leadership Qualities: Effective nonprofit leaders exhibit qualities such as adaptability, empathy, and vision. They must navigate complex challenges while staying true to the organization’s purpose. Development and Retention: Nonprofits can invest in leadership development to retain talent and prepare future leaders. This involves defining competencies, creating professional development plans, and fostering consistent development conversations between managers and staff. Remember, nonprofit leadership is about more than just titles—it’s about making a real difference in the world! It was a privilege to speak at the Australian Women’s Leadership symposium on Friday, hearing and learning from some incredible women who inspire me in my own life and career. I spoke about my passion for leading with empathy – and how if we want to be unafraid and unapologetic about taking up our rightful place in the world, we need to start with self-compassion and backing ourselves in. All too often, women feel under-prepared or under-skilled for leadership roles and will ask themselves, “Why me? Why do I think I have what it takes?” We need to start asking ourselves, “why not me?” Being self-reflective but kind to ourselves when we falter, not setting the bar impossibly high, and seeing mistakes not as a character failing but as a chance to learn – this is compassionate leadership in action. But of course, self-confidence is a journey. It doesn’t happen overnight and it’s not a one-time exercise. It’s something we all need to constantly work on throughout our careers. And as much as harnessing our individual confidence is important, we also need to remove the structural barriers that hold other women back. We make up half of the employees in Australia but women comprise only 19% of CEOs and 32% of key management positions. At this rate, it will take 100 years for women to make up at least 40% of all CEO positions in the ASX200. This isn’t good enough. We’ve come a long way but this isn’t good enough. Let’s get it done.
