The Space Week NL ’23 has come to an end, and proved to be an incredible success! 🚀 Over 30 partners from within and outside of the industry joined forces in a strong collaboration to showcase everything that the Dutch space sector has to offer. World Space Week was a global celebration of space science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of humanity. It is observed every year from October 4 to 10, as declared by the United Nations in 1999. These dates commemorate two important milestones in space history: the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, on October 4, 1957, and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty on October 10, 1967. During World Space Week, various space agencies, companies, schools, museums, and clubs organize events and activities to educate people about the benefits of space exploration and cooperation. Some examples of events are exhibitions, lectures, workshops, quizzes, competitions, and rocket launches. The theme for World Space Week 2023 was "Space and Entrepreneurship", which highlights the role of space innovation and business in creating new opportunities and solutions for the challenges facing our planet. World Space Week is coordinated by the World Space Week Association (WSWA), a non-governmental organization that works with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and other partners to promote the celebration worldwide. The WSWA also supports national coordinators who organize events in their own countries. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and its centers, are one of the leading space-faring nations that participates in World Space Week every year. World Space Week was a great opportunity to learn more about space and its impact on our lives. It also inspires us to dream big and explore the infinite possibilities of the final frontier. The second chapter of Indian Space Conclave 2023, organized by the ISpA- Indian Space Association commenced today. With the theme, ‘Bhumandal se Brahaman Tak’ (From Earth to the Entire Universe), the conclave would cover multi-sectoral usage and space capabilities impact. Lt Gen Anil Kumar Bhatt (retd), Director General, ISpA presented the welcome address where he said, “We welcome 24 French companies to build collaboration in future. We look forwards to explore the potential of collaboration and innovation in space sector, and how international collaborations can be done in space sector.” Chirag Doshi, MD & CEO, Walchandnagar Industries Limited and Member, EC & Co-chair, Launch Vehicle Committee, ISpA said, “Indo-French collaboration goes back to the development of sounding rockets in the 1960s. New Space revolution necessitates expanding Indo-French partnership through the startups and private sectors. Beyond ISRO - Indian Space Research Organization and Centre National d'Études Spatiales, we have the opportunity to strengthen this relationship to develop state-of-the art space facilities. Both India and France believe in using space to solve pressing challenges such as climate change. India and France have a shared ambition to harness the immense potential of space for the benefit of mankind.” Stéphane VESVAL, SVP Sales and Marketing, AIRBUS DEFENSE AND SPACE HOLDINGS, INC. said, “We have a rich experience of engaging with Indian space sector. In 2005, we jointly build a telecommunications satellite. Indian government has a special role to play as an anchor in the development of a space ecosystem, particularly in defence, telecom, and connectivity. Space is a capex-heavy sector by default. "The Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Innovation Science and Technology (FMIST), Chief Uche Nnaji has said that Nigeria is set to carry out its first human space flight, making history on the continent of Africa.  ...  Chief Nnaji while describing the event as momentous, said it couldn’t have come at a better time as a gift to the Space Agency, marking its 25th anniversary this year...Human space flight is a key objective of the nation’s Space Program, which was first scheduled for 2018, leaving Nigeria 6 years behind... With help of partnership with SERA, the past delay can be corrected to align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Minister congratulated the Director General of NASRDA and his team... He explained that SERA which is a private establishment has a mandate to democratize Space so that anyone can be an astronaut. ... The Nigerian populace will choose a candidate in an open democratic process that will be run by SERA. He added that Nigeria was nominated because the country had demonstrated strong interests in Space exploration & is a nation of scientists, engineers, & entrepreneurs. The co-founder of SERA, Joshua Skurla, called the event a milestone for African continent & assured that his team would do all it takes to put the first Nigerian astronaut in Space. Also speaking at the event, the first SERA Astronaut, Victor Hespenia said a trip to Space has a great chance of changing the lives of young Nigerians, as it can inspire them to dream & create space-based inventions valuable to the growth of the country.... 🚀🌕 China's Ambitious Lunar Mission: Sending Astronauts to the Moon by 2030: China's Manned Space Agency announced plans to send astronauts to the #Moon within the next six years. Led by Deputy Director General Lin Xiqiang, the delegation, including astronauts and experts, shared this vision during a visit to Hong Kong. The delegation emphasised President Xi Jinping's recognition of technological development in Hong Kong and Macau, noting their contributions to national space missions. The agency looks forward to including astronauts from these regions in future missions, particularly to the Tiangong space station. China's space station is not just a national project; it's open to international collaboration. Lin Xiqiang highlighted the possibility of astronauts from various countries participating in missions aboard the Chinese space station in the future. The process for selecting the fourth batch of national astronauts, including candidates from Hong Kong and Macau, is in its final stages. This move signifies China's commitment to diversifying and expanding its astronaut corps. The delegation's visit includes interaction with local students, aiming to inspire the next generation of space enthusiasts and professionals. A variety show at the Hong Kong Coliseum will further engage the public in China's space endeavours. 🇬🇧🤝🇨🇦 The UK Space Agency and Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne have signed an enhanced MoU to further areas of cooperation and information sharing on space! This will deepen already close alliance in the space domain. The two countries are already working on the £1.2m Aqualunar Challenge - a new international challenge prize delivered by Challenge Works on behalf of the UKSA and CSA - is rewarding the design of innovative technologies to make human habitation on the Moon viable, by finding ways to purify water buried beneath the lunar surface. The Science & Exploration Bilateral Programme is supporting a potential UK-Canada partnership on CASTOR. An astronomy mission currently under study by the Canadian Space Agency, CASTOR will fill a gap in current observing capabilities, by providing state of the art imaging and spectroscopy in ultraviolet and optical-blue wavelengths. The UK has begun work on the development and space qualification programme for advanced imaging technology from Teledyne e2v and the associated electronics, along with contributions to the scientific data processing. 🚀 Congratulations to the newly selected cohort of Chinese astronauts, the Taikonauts, but more women are needed! 🌟 The China Manned Space Engineering Office (CMSEO) at the China National Space Administration has announced the selection of 10 new astronauts, including eight pilots and two payload specialists, from Hong Kong and Macao. This diverse group will undergo rigorous training at the Astronaut Center of China, preparing them for missions to the Tiangong space station and future lunar landings. This milestone is a testament to China's growing ambitions in human spaceflight, with plans to expand Tiangong and establish a sustained lunar presence before 2030. The inclusion of international astronauts in future missions further underscores the global nature of space exploration. However, it's essential to address the gender disparity within the Taikonaut corps. Out of 49 astronauts selected since 1998, only two have been women. Recent history in human spaceflight has shown that women are equally capable and crucial to the success of missions. While the current selection process has a heavy emphasis on fighter pilots—a field with a lower female-to-male ratio—the future of space exploration demands a broader range of skills. Missions to the Chinese space station and the lunar surface will require payload specialists, including engineers and scientists. Therefore, it's vital to include more women in space exploration to inspire and stimulate the next generation of explorers. Let’s celebrate this achievement while continuing to advocate for greater gender diversity in space.
