🚀 A recent article by Forbes highlights the rapid growth of the #TechStartup scene in #Switzerland. With a surge in new enterprises and a rise in venture capital investments, the country is asserting its status as a thriving hub for innovation and technological advancements. 🇨🇭 The tech scene in Switzerland, particularly in the #GreaterZurichArea, has proven to be a fertile ground for startups, giving rise to successful projects such as carbon capture project Climeworks and logistics software provider Scandit, both of which have gained unicorn status. These up-and-coming companies coexist with well-established global players like Google, IBM, and NVIDIA, resulting in a thriving tech landscape that has become increasingly appealing to venture capitalists worldwide. In fact, last year saw #Swiss tech companies secure an impressive $4 billion in funding across 380 funding rounds. ⚙️ According to Pascal Mathis, co-founder of Wingman Ventures, Switzerland's tech sector has gained prominence due to two main factors: a growing culture of entrepreneurship and the presence of prestigious technical universities such as the ETH Zürich and the EPFL. These universities not only produce talented individuals but also generate innovative spin-off companies. Furthermore, Switzerland's quality of life and favorable regulatory environment are attracting both emerging and established tech ventures, establishing the region as a key player in the tech industry. 🔮 As we eye the horizon, the words of Pascal Mathis resonate: "Almost all the pieces in the puzzle are in place – this is our opportunity to build Europe’s Silicon Valley". The momentum is tangible, and the path ahead promising. Intrigued? Read the full article here: https://okt.to/FYwuaz. SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen goes Europe 🇪🇺 ?! Last week, together with other personalities of the innovation system from all over Europe, I was invited by Commissioner Iliana Ivanova for a gathering on a fresh perspective to foster innovation and entrepreneurship. Here are my two main ideas that I shared with the audience: 1️⃣ Large Volume Deep Tech funding scarce and how to fix it Deep Tech capital also needs to be patient, well above the 10yr investment/de-investment horizon of most VCs. Whilst early stage, lower volume (<10m€) funding is readily available in the EU, both early stage (deep tech) and later stage scaling funding from European sources is scarce, which leads to trade sale activity to the outside of the EU of the up and coming champions. SPRIND addresses some of the early stage deep tech gaps in funding, but this should be done on a European level, not just from Germany. For the scaling stage of deep tech, other instruments than just Venture Capital are required, among them debt funding, government guarantees, infrastructure funds - at the scale of 50-500m€ per project. Thus an EU project should be set up to foster such funding instruments, either as a fund of funds or direct or both. 2️⃣ Challenges to battle lengthy, expensive and exhausting due-diligences Funding is very stressful, especially for startups that do not yet have dedicated funding teams. The period from writing the pitch deck to money in the bank account, even for successful fund raisers, can we well beyond 12 months. At SPRIND we have developed a competitive instrument we call Challenges. For Challenges targeting early stage companies or founders, we use Pre-Commercial Procurement as an instrument. For the recipients of the funding these come in as revenues and do not impact the cap table. Challenges are a multi phase approach that begins with a call (usually 6-8 weeks), than the jury work selecting the proposals, ending with pitches of the nominated teams, resulting in the selection of a larger number of teams for the first phase of funding (50-500k€, 3-12 months). During the phases the teams are coached and brought together in „Challenge Days“ to exchange progress and network with the jury and experts. At the end of a phase the teams return for another pitch round, the field gets down-selected to fewer teams that receive a higher funding amount for the next phase, usually double of what it was in phase one, or for hardware/capex phases an even higher amount. This can be repeated until other funding means become viable. As the Challenge itself is a thorough and extensive due diligence on the capabilities of the teams, Venture Capital becomes very interested in the teams selected by the process. https://lnkd.in/e44XYYhF Jano Costard Christian Bogatu Erik Schäffner Nicolas Krink Patrick P. Farewell #BerlinStartupScholarship, welcome #CorporateAccelerator! Our last cohort as part of the Berlin Startup Scholarship program in Berlin recently came to an end. It has been an incredible journey over the past 5 years, not only for the participants, but also for us as program team! Thanks to the ESF and the Senatsverwaltung für Wirtschaft, Energie und Betriebe, we were able to support great startups in Berlin throughout 7 cohorts! We have learned a lot along the way and reached a level where we consider the program to be very mature. My lessons learned 📢 how to build relationsships with impact: 1. Start from corporate demand side, ensure commitment and resource allocation on the corporate side - random matchmaking takes too much power. 2. Have the expectations clear from the beginning: it needs to be transparent which relationsship should be sought with the startup - is it customer, supplier, co-creation partner, learning companion, ..? 3. Bet on teams rather than on technologies: The best technology won´t help if the team breaks apart or is inefficient. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the founders and program participants for their trust and cooperation. I know that the whole administration and "rules" of the public funding within the Berlin Startup Scholarship were sometimes complicated, and I thank my former and current team members (Marisa Neubert, Kim Kordel, Dierk Niemeyer, Anna Hünemohr, Anna-Maria Manz, Alina Nastas, Sven Liebau, Lena Finkbeiner, Tatjana Schulte, Anna S., Aline Koch, Beata Marszalkowski and all the coaches that supported us) for the passion, structure, patience and persistance. To my colleagues at Bosch, I thank you for the great support of the teams. I was positively amazed by your helpfulness to support the participants even beyond the daily work routine with advice, contacts and sometimes even with collaborations! Just #LikeaBosch. 💪 We are particularly proud of the collaborations that resulted in longer-lasting business relationships. Where one door closes, another usually opens: We are very happy that Bosch Startup Harbour continues as a self-funded #accelerator! Startups can apply for joining the international accelerator now. However, in the future there must be a fit to the focus areas defined by Bosch. On the one hand, this is a pity (because especially the more distant topics like Fashion Tech were so much fun and inspiring for our organization). On the other hand, a new business model naturally requires a more stringent focus. Learn more about the new program here: www.startup-harbour.com
