Innovation is reshaping the retail checkout experience, but self-checkout has its challenges. A recent Propmodo article points out that while self-checkout offers convenience, unreliable technology has led to increased theft and customer frustration. Some retailers are even reversing course, limiting or removing self-checkout kiosks in response. Meanwhile, companies like Uniqlo and Amazon are exploring new technology, such as RFID and smart shopping carts, to streamline the checkout process. As retailers continue experimenting with these innovative solutions, the future of in-store checkout is still being defined. Do you think new technologies will replace traditional checkout systems, or is self-checkout here to stay? 🤔 Read more: https://bit.ly/4bskSIv

Target stores made headlines recently by stating that they would be putting strict limits on self-checkout kiosks in stores, including limiting it to 10 items or fewer. Why the step backward after a long push into self-checkout systems? 👇 👇 Corporate leaders cite “shrink” or product theft as a main driver of this decision, saying that it’s too easy for shoplifters to either fail to scan items, mis-scan items, or purposely enter erroneous product IDs. And it isn’t just Target re-thinking its self-checkout systems. Retail stores in general are rethinking how they do checkout, with the need to balance labor costs, shrink costs, and customer convenience including speed-to-checkout. With smart RFID tags, such as those implemented in some “just walk out” enabled stores, items can be automatically scanned as you approach a self-checkout kiosk. Items would be much more difficult to hide or mis-scanned, saving stores money on shrink and keeping checkouts convenient for customers. At RRD, we provide retail stores and manufacturers across the globe with smart RFID-enabled product tags and labels that fit into any existing RFID ecosystem. Want to see how RFID can keep stores profitable and customer convenience top of mind? Shoot me a DM with any questions and check out the full range of RFID services in the link in the comments. 👇 👇 👇

According to one of the leading research organization, around 72% of the retail shopping still happens at the store and 88% of the overall purchases have a store component in it. Yes, online shopping is making its presence felt, but has a long way to go or rather a very difficult road to travel. The store purchases provide in-person interactions and engagement and hence will always remain the de facto mode of shopping. However, to be ahead, the stores will need to focus a lot on personalization and the retailers know it. More than 60% of the retailers are working on enhancing the in-store experience through personalization as their top priority. In our industry, whether it’s C-store operations or broader enterprises, the distinction between mere vendors and true partners is pivotal. I love how this article emphasizes the importance of integrating tech solutions, like unified POS systems, to avoid siloed approaches that can hinder customer experiences. For companies in the C-store sector, or any large enterprise, it’s crucial to find partners, not just vendors, who understand the entire store tech stack. This approach ensures a holistic solution that supports all aspects of the business, rather than addressing isolated issues. True partners will help create seamless, integrated systems that enhance both customer experience and operational efficiency. It’s an insightful reminder of the value of strategic partnerships in navigating the complexities of retail tech.

"This study considers transaction convenience as a time perspective of customer situations. Transaction convenience represents the time it takes to complete a purchase in a smart retail store and measures transaction efficiency. From the viewpoint of consumers, they prefer convenient and fast shopping processes in grocery stores and obtain their desired goods as quickly as possible. A long queue for check-out will negatively affect the service quality of shopping (Seiders et al., 2007) and reduce shopping efficiency and desire (Collier et al., 2015). Especially for customers with limited time, inefficient transaction procedures and slow shopping speed may even lead to passive emotions, such as time pressure (Chang et al., 2023; Chen et al., 2020; Chocarro et al., 2013). In this case, if customers can efficiently and quickly conclude the purchase tasks and complete the payment, then they will be more satisfied with the service quality of smart retail stores and will like to make a purchase (Jih, 2007; Li, 2018)." https://rdcu.be/dxMx4 #reatil #Supermercados #colas #retailtech #retailindustry #VirtualQueue #VirtualQueueManagement #smartretail
