Are you are interested in volunteering with Suicide&Co this year? UK businesses give employees a total 11 million days of paid volunteering time each year, with only 14.3% of it being used, meaning that an estimated 200 million hours of corporate volunteering goes to waste every single year (London Benchmarking Group 2020)! Most people are unaware of their policies but even those who are forget to take them or don't know what to use them for. At Suicide&Co we have lots of opportunities to volunteer your time in 2024, from supporting at fundraising events, to assisting with our merchandise fulfillment. In 2023 we worked with various companies to utilise employee's volunteer days and this year we want to help you make your days count! 📣Why Volunteering in the Workplace is a good idea!📣 Did you know that this week is Volunteers’ Week – 3-9 June 2024? Volunteers’ Week has been around for 40 years and is used as a time to inspire more people to make a difference. It takes place for a week from the first Monday in June. ***************************** Why volunteer? The Volunteers’ Week organisation states volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to society and help others, which in turn makes you feel great. To find out more please click on the following link https://lnkd.in/eDcQqZbe *****************************   I believe it is a good idea for all organisations to encourage volunteering all year round whether they provide time off for their people to volunteer in a way they choose or arrange corporate events and opportunities. Whilst it is great to have a reminder, promote and celebrate volunteering for a week; there are so many more benefits of this becoming a regular part of workplace culture. Having a Volunteers policy can be really helpful too. Here’s some of my reasons why: 1.   Clarity and Consistency: Clear guidelines ensure everyone knows what’s what. 2.   Boosts Participation: Structured support encourages more people to want to volunteer and get involved. 3.   Enhances Engagement: Volunteering often increases job satisfaction and connection to the workplace. 4.   Skill Development: Employees can gain valuable skills that benefit their professional roles. 5.   Positive Image: Demonstrates corporate social responsibility, which in turn can help to attract customers and top talent. 6.   Team Building: Group activities often strengthen team bonds and collaboration. 7.   Well-being: Volunteering can improve mental health and provide a sense of purpose. If you don’t already have a Volunteers policy I recommend that you implement one and see your workplace thrive! "I can make such a difference volunteering. If I hadn't spoken to the cubs group - they may never have gone on to fundraise!" Zehra is one of our Community Engagement Volunteers, which means she visits local groups to tell them about Crisis, the work we do, and encourages them to fundraise to help end homelessness. She tells her story. "I've been volunteering for over a year. I like to visit Scout, Guides and Cub groups as this is where the opportunities are in my local area. I’m used to visiting these groups with my children and I like engaging with younger people. "I chose to volunteer for Crisis because after donating monthly for years, I wanted to go beyond that. I have a bit more time as my children get older and I want to make a bit more of a difference. "I usually present to children between the ages of 5-16. I really enjoy doing an activity or playing games, or with younger children drawing and colouring. My talks are generally about what ‘Home’ means to them, the causes of homelessness and how they can help. "It always amazes me how engaged young people are. They are so much more engaged than what you think they would be. They always ask lots of questions. ‘Why do people have dogs?’ is a popular one! One great question I had was from a 14 year old. He asked, "what the government can do to change homelessness?", which sparked lots of conversations. "The questions always prompt interesting conversations. When asked about why people sit outside McDonalds, I turned it into a conversation by asking them where they would sit and what the dangers are. "While volunteering, I've learnt that you can make a difference. If I hadn’t spoken to a Cubs group would they have gone on to fundraise? An individual can make a difference! "If you're thinking about volunteering, just go for it. You get so much out of it, even if you have just 1 hour or 2 over a month, you make a difference."
