Latency vs Throughput: Understanding the Difference and Importance of Balancing Both Latency: Imagine you're ordering a coffee at your favourite coffee shop. Latency in this scenario is the time it takes from the moment you order your coffee to the time you actually receive it. If it takes 2 minutes to get your coffee after ordering, that's the latency - the delay in getting your service completed. Low latency here would mean getting your coffee quickly after placing the order. Throughput: Throughput, on the other hand, would be how many coffee orders the shop can handle in a certain period, say an hour. If the coffee shop can serve 100 customers in an hour, its throughput is 100 coffees per hour. A higher throughput means the shop can serve more customers in less time. Importance of Balancing Both: Both low latency (quick service for each customer) and high throughput (serving many customers) are essential for customer satisfaction and business efficiency. A shop that only focuses on low latency might serve individual customers quickly but might not handle a large volume of customers well. Conversely, focusing solely on throughput could mean serving many customers but with longer waiting times.

Can a business truly exist without customer service? Many companies claim customer obsession as a core value, but true dedication to this principle is rare. How deeply do we commit to being genuinely customer-focused? Before Purim, a customer requested an additional item. Caught up in the pre-holiday rush, I forgot to note it down. When I remembered—obviously just after the UPS truck had departed—I immediately arranged for an overnight UPS shipment the next day, without hesitation. Whenever I am deciding how to handle a complicated customer service issue, I think of the Zappos Pizza story A group of Zappos executives, including CEO Tony Hsieh, were out one night when Hsieh was challenged about his company's dedication to customer service. He called the Zappos hotline, asking for help finding a late-night pizza delivery. In minutes, the representative provided a list of five pizzerias still open. Hsieh's actions weren't madness but a testament to his belief in exceptional service. This sentiment is Zappos' motto, “Powered by Service.”
