A Hong Kong ban on Japanese seafood imports covering live, chilled, dried and preserved goods, seaweed products and sea salt from 10 prefectures has recently come into effect… Officials have said that any lifting of the order might require “third-party” certification from authorities in the country to prove food safety. However, residents returning from the country will still be allowed to bring back a “small amount” of such items as souvenirs, authorities have said. Local businesses are increasing their local seafood sourcing as a result. Now, I’m not going to get into the science or politics of this… But, I can’t help thinking that bans, embargoes, and boycotts miss a key point: Making and using food sustainably and safely is a world problem. If Japan – one of the planet’s most advanced economies – is struggling with it, the world needs to work together to solve this riddle. What do you think? https://lnkd.in/eENfiRG9 #foodandbeverage #sustainability #hospitality

Canada has pledged CAD 700,000 to support developing countries in strengthening their food safety systems, aiming to ensure global access to safe and nutritious food. Food safety is a significant concern in developing nations, with millions falling ill and dying annually due to contaminated food. Canada's investment will improve the safety and quality of food products and foster trade and economic growth in recipient countries. The support will be channeled through the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s International Regulatory Cooperation program, focusing on developing regulations, inspection programs, and laboratory testing capabilities. This commitment aligns with Canada’s dedication to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 2, which aims to achieve food security and nutrition for all. In addition to food safety, Canada has pledged support for other SDGs, showcasing its dedication to creating a just and sustainable world. #SafeFood4All #CanadaSupportsFoodSafety #GlobalNutritionInitiative #FoodSafetyMatters #SDG2FoodSecurity #SustainableWorldNow #CanadaSupportsSDGs #HealthyFoodForAll #SafeAndNutritious #FoodSafetyCommitment

Should we be paying more attention to food security at a national level? Manaaki Whenua researchers certainly think so. Turbulent world affairs, the COVID-19 pandemic, and extreme weather events have caused food prices to surge, and in Aotearoa New Zealand the loss of highly productive land to housing development is also posing a great threat to our food security. "Addressing consumer issues, such as meeting out-of-season demand and cultural requirements, increasing urban food production, and reducing food waste, are among the first steps we can take as individuals to improve our food security,” says researcher Dr Suzie Greenhalgh.

"The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting by fools." - Thucydides
Achieving food security is a priority of political parties regardless of ideology. Therefore, countries work assiduously to ensure that this project is accomplished. The proactive approach to tackling the issue is admirable, but in their pursuit of food security, some countries adopt counterproductive policies. The assumption that protectionism alleviates the risks of food security is still embraced by many policymakers when there is no correlation.
