[Nidec’s Support for Development of Next Generation🌷Exhibition of Motor Craft Workshop at Keihanna Science Experience Festival] Nidec Keihanna Technology Center exhibited a booth for a motor craft workshop at the 10th Keihanna Science Experience Festival for elementary school students organized by the Keihanna Science Communication Promotion Network in March. This largest science experience event in the Keihanna area, where three prefectures meet, Kyoto, Osaka and Nara, is held to provide children with opportunities to experience the wonder and fun of science through science crafts and experiences. 250 elementary school students, selected by lottery from more than 1,000 applicants, were divided into 24 booths for this event. This year was the sixth time we have exhibited, and 21 children participated in our workshop to learn about our company, motors and the environment. The Nidec Group will continue to actively contribute to nurturing the next generation in each region where it operates.

How to communicate science to 17 000 school children… Teknikens Hus (‘House of Technology’) here in Luleå is one of the oldest science centers in Sweden, celebrating it’s 36th anniversary this year, and they have just launched their new exhibition for school children, energy use in society. Last week, we had our annual scientific council meeting at Teknikens Hus. A handful of scientists representing different disciplines here at the university discussed a variety of science/technology topics that can and should be better communicated to the public. This time we touched on the use of AI in the wider society, health benefits from spending time in nature, energy use and storage, geosciences and critical metals, climate change, and carbon capture and storage. All this within a couple of hours 😊 I really love these cross disciplinary discussions where I get to provide a geoscientific perspective and we always manage to squeeze out a few ideas for public outreach activities, both for the center and for us scientists. As 17 000 school children pass through Teknikens Hus each year, these meetings are excellent for discussing outreach activities. #outreach #sciencecenter #sciencecommunication Inset image, curtesy of Teknikens Hus.

Last week RSC Chief Executive Helen Pain, along with the CEOs of the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Biology, had a good conversation with Science Minister George Freeman MP about how science professional bodies are helping to deliver the Science and Technology Framework and build an Innovation nation. A few takeaways for our policy work: 1. Working with other science bodies often magnifies our impact 2. As professional bodies/ learned societies we contribute a range of insights relevant to policy. These include the information and stories from our members, the insights we gain from accrediting degrees and CPD, the learning from working with science teachers and not for profit publisher experience of transitioning to open access. 3. These fruitful conversations make a real difference. https://lnkd.in/e9eNjY7Z #science #innovation
